De aanmeldperiode voor kandidaten voor de ECHO Awards is weer begonnen! Net als voorgaande jaren zou ik jullie willen vragen deze informatie in jullie opleiding te verspreiden. Bijgevoegd is dit jaar een nieuwe flyer/onepager met een overzichtelijk stappenplan voor studenten die mee willen doen (beschikbaar in het NL/ENG).

Over de ECHO Awards
De ECHO Awards zijn een jaarlijkse erkenning voor studenten afkomstig uit niet-westerse gemeenschap die studeren in het hoger onderwijs en impact creëren op urgente maatschappelijke vraagstukken.
Studenten die in aanmerking komen voor een ECHO Award zijn Nederlandse studenten met een niet-westerse achtergrond of vluchtelingenachtergrond die aantoonbare maatschappelijke impact hebben, bijdragen aan beleids- en systeemverandering en leiderschapskwaliteiten laten zien.
De winnaars worden geselecteerd door een onafhankelijke jury en mogen een volledig verzorgde Summercourse aan UCLA in de Verenigde Staten volgen (onder voorbehoud).
Award-categorieën
De ECHO Awards zijn te verdelen in verschillende categorieën. Aan elke categorie is een award verbonden, namelijk de:

  *   HBO Award - voor studenten in het hoger beroepsonderwijs;
  *   WO Award - voor studenten in het wetenschappelijk onderwijs;
  *   Actualiteiten Award - categorie-overstijgend, voor studenten in het HBO en/of WO die zich richten op specifieke actuele en urgente maatschappelijke vraagstukken binnen het diversiteits- en inclusiedomein.
De VU mag studenten voordragen voor de WO Award en de Actualiteiten Award. Een onderwijsinstelling mag per categorie 3 studenten voordragen. In totaal mag de VU dus maximaal 6 studenten voordragen.
Diversiteit in disciplines en vernieuwing
Stichting ECHO heeft expliciet aangegeven het belangrijk te vinden dat de voordrachten een brede diversiteit aan studierichtingen en disciplines weerspiegelen. In de afgelopen jaren zien we dat een aanzienlijk deel van de voordrachten afkomstig is uit de (bio)medische en gezondheidsgerelateerde opleidingen. Deze studenten leveren waardevolle en indrukwekkende bijdragen - en blijven vanzelfsprekend welkom in de voordrachten.
Tegelijkertijd constateert ECHO dat andere disciplines relatief minder zichtbaar zijn in het nominatieveld. Om recht te doen aan de breedte van maatschappelijk leiderschap binnen het hoger onderwijs, doet ECHO nadrukkelijk de oproep aan instellingen om hun blik te verruimen. ECHO moedigt instellingen aan om:

  *   Actief te zoeken binnen verschillende faculteiten en opleidingsdomeinen, waaronder ook kunst- en cultuuropleidingen, technische en ontwerpgerichte studies, economische opleidingen, onderwijsopleidingen, sociale wetenschappen, geesteswetenschappen en interdisciplinaire programma's.
  *   Ook studenten te overwegen die maatschappelijke impact creëren via ondernemerschap, technologie, kunst, beleid, onderwijs, communicatie, data, recht, duurzaamheid of community-based initiatieven.
  *   Niet alleen "bekende" of traditionele leiderschapsprofielen te nomineren (bijvoorbeeld studenten met zichtbare bestuursfuncties of klassieke excellentietrajecten), maar ook studenten die op minder conventionele manieren verandering realiseren.
  *   Ruimte te maken voor vernieuwende vormen van leiderschap, zoals collectief leiderschap, artistiek activisme, sociaal ondernemerschap, grassroots-organisatie, digitale innovatie of bruggenbouw tussen gemeenschappen.

VU-brede interne selectieprocedure

Omdat er door elke onderwijsinstelling een beperkt aantal studenten mag worden voorgedragen voor de ECHO Awards, werken we bij de VU met een VU-brede interne selectieronde. Elke faculteit mag voor deze VU-brede interne selectieronde 2 kandidaten aandragen. Bij meer gegadigden bepalen de faculteiten zelf welke 2 kandidaten ze voor de VU-brede selectieronde aandragen.

Let op: voordrachten die buiten de faculteiten om voor de VU-brede selectieprocedure worden aangeleverd worden niet in behandeling genomen door de jury.

Bij voordracht voor de interne selectieronde moeten de faculteiten en studenten de volgende documenten aanleveren:

  *   Volledig ingevuld voordrachtsformulier. Zie voor het voordrachtsformulier de bijlagen, beschikbaar in het NL en ENG. Let op: het formulier moet worden ingevuld door de facultaire contactpersoon die de student voordraagt, bijv. een docent, opleidingsdirecteur, faculteitsbestuurder of beleidsmedewerker. Het is niet de bedoeling dat studenten dit formulier zelf invullen!
  *   Een persoonlijke motivatiebrief van de voorgedragen student. Zie voor de richtlijnen van ECHO voor de motivatiebrief de bijlagen van deze e-mail, beschikbaar in NL en ENG.

  *   Een CV van de voorgedragen student (max. 2 pagina's).

  *   Optioneel: Een videopitch (max. 3 minuten) waarin de kandidaat zijn/haar/hun visie en impact presenteert.

Interne planning en deadline facultaire selectieprocedure BETA

De deadline voor het indienen van voordrachten staat voor BETA op vrijdag 8 mei om 23:59 uur. Voordrachten mogen via de mail ingediend worden via onderwijsbeleid.beta at vu.nl<mailto:onderwijsbeleid.beta at vu.nl>. De facultaire selectiecommissie kiest dan de BETA-kandidaten. Eind mei of begin juni zal de VU-jury de ingediende voordrachten bespreken. Indien de jury het nodig acht volgt kort daarop een ronde met korte interviews, waarna de uitslag bekend zal worden gemaakt. In de derde week van juni zal de secretaris Onderwijsprijzen een voordrachtsbrief namens de VU opstellen en deze ter goedkeuring voorleggen aan het CvB. Op uiterlijk 26 juni zullen de geselecteerde studenten namens de VU worden voorgedragen bij ECHO.

Attached you will also find a flyer/one-pager with a clear step-by-step plan for students who want to participate (available in Dutch and English).
About the ECHO Awards
The ECHO Awards are an annual recognition for students from non-Western communities who are studying in higher education and making an impact on urgent social issues.
Students eligible for an ECHO Award are Dutch students with a non-Western or refugee background who have a demonstrable social impact, contribute to policy and system change, and demonstrate leadership qualities.
The winners are selected by an independent jury and are eligible to attend a fully funded summer course at UCLA in the United States (subject to change).
Award categories
The ECHO Awards are divided into different categories. Each category has its own award, namely:

  *   HBO Award - for students in higher professional education;
  *   WO Award - for students in academic education;
  *   Current Affairs Award - cross-category, for students in higher professional education and/or academic education who focus on specific current and urgent social issues within the diversity and inclusion domain.
The VU may nominate students for the WO Award and the Current Affairs Award. An educational institution may nominate three students per category. In total, the VU may therefore nominate a maximum of six students.
Diversity in disciplines and innovation
The ECHO Foundation has explicitly stated that it considers it important for the nominations to reflect a broad diversity of fields of study and disciplines. In recent years, ECHO has seen that a significant proportion of the nominations come from (bio)medical and health-related programmes. These students make valuable and impressive contributions - and remain welcome in the nominations, of course.
At the same time, ECHO notes that other disciplines are relatively less visible in the field of nominations. In order to do justice to the breadth of social leadership within higher education, ECHO expressly calls on institutions to broaden their horizons. ECHO encourages institutions to:

  *   Actively search within different faculties and study programmes, including arts and culture programmes, technical and design-oriented studies, economics programmes, teacher training programmes, social sciences, humanities and interdisciplinary programmes.
  *   Also consider students who create social impact through entrepreneurship, technology, art, policy, education, communication, data, law, sustainability or community-based initiatives.
  *   Do not only nominate "well-known" or traditional leadership profiles (e.g. students with visible administrative positions or classic excellence trajectories), but also students who bring about change in less conventional ways.
  *   Make room for innovative forms of leadership, such as collective leadership, artistic activism, social entrepreneurship, grassroots organisation, digital innovation or bridge-building between communities.
VU-wide internal selection procedure
Because each educational institution is allowed to nominate a limited number of students for the ECHO Awards, VU Amsterdam works with a VU-wide internal selection round. Each faculty may nominate two candidates for this VU-wide internal selection round. If there are more candidates, the faculties themselves decide which two candidates they will nominate for the VU-wide selection round.
Please note: nominations submitted for the VU-wide selection procedure outside of the faculties will not be considered by the jury.
When nominating candidates for the internal selection round, programmes and students must submit the following documents:

  *   Fully completed nomination form. See the appendices for the nomination form, available in Dutch and English. Please note: the form must be completed by the faculty contact person nominating the student, e.g. a lecturer, programme director, faculty administrator or policy officer. Students are not expected to complete this form themselves!
  *   A personal letter of motivation from the nominated student. For ECHO's guidelines for the letter of motivation, see the attachments to this email, available in Dutch and English.
  *   A CV of the nominated student (max. 2 pages).
  *   Optional: A video pitch (max. 3 minutes) in which the candidate presents his/her/their vision and impact.


Internal planning and deadline faculty selection procedure BETA
The deadline for submitting BETA nominations is Friday 8 May at 23:59. Nominations may be submitted by email at onderwijsbeleid.beta at vu.nl<mailto:onderwijsbeleid.beta at vu.nl>. The faculty selection committee will then select the BETA candidates. At the end of May or beginning of June, the jury will discuss the nominations submitted. If the jury deems it necessary, a round of short interviews will follow shortly thereafter, after which the results will be announced. In the third week of June, the Education Awards Secretary will draft a nomination letter on behalf of VU Amsterdam and submit it to the Executive Board for approval. No later than 26 June, the selected students will be nominated to ECHO on behalf of VU Amsterdam.
