[Topology.beta] New reading seminar on diffeomorphisms at the VU Amsterdam

Dear All,



We are excited to start a reading seminar in September at the VU Amsterdam to study the group of diffeomorphisms of manifolds. Our main goal is to see that this group is simple (that is, it cannot be decomposed further) and that it can be used to reconstruct the manifold.



The seminar will mix together

  1.  analysis (some proofs require Nash-Moser Implicit Function Theorem),
  2.  dynamics (Smale conjecture on the centralizer of a generic diffeomorphism).
  3.  topology (relationship between foliations and diffeomorphisms).



Therefore, we think that the talks will be of interest to many of you. Moreover, the prerequisites for the seminar are very light (calculus of vector fields and differential forms) and we will mainly use the self-contained book “The structure of classical diffeomorphism groups” by Augustin Banyaga.

The first meeting of the seminar is on Tuesday, September 9 at 11:00 in NU-09A46 (VU Amsterdam, NU Building, De Boelelaan 1111, 1081 HV Amsterdam).

We will introduce the seminar and distribute the topics among voluntary speakers.
