Dear colleagues,

I hope you had a wonderful break.

Today I hanged attached posters around the coffee machines, printers and in our hall-ways in our new VO building. They and this email serve as a reminder for you to think about projects for the Mechanical Engineering BSc assignment that starts next month.

To remind yourself on what the assignment entails, please see the attachments and the slides that Sven and I presented in the last meeting of the last year<https://vunl.sharepoint.com/:p:/r/sites/BETA-PRJ-Coordinate-and-Comunicate-Department-Affairs/Shared%20Documents/01.%20Staff%20Lunch%20Meetings/2024%20Staff%20Meeting/2024-WK%2048-November%2026/04.%2020241126_ME_BScAssAdv_SA_JvH.pptx?d=w8306b7c574f44da383a70b000f5bd29d&csf=1&web=1&e=KDAlGl>. You can use the attached word document form and return it filled in to me (or use the web from<https://forms.office.com/e/ptVVdY54yJ> if you have a utwente account).

The deadline for the project proposals is next week Tuesday 14 January. Should you need more time, please get in touch. In case of any questions or you want to have a chat about your proposal, please let me know as well.

Cheers,

     Joris

Dear colleagues,

Following up from the short Mechanical Engineering (ME) student skills presentation by Sven and I during the 26.11 staff meeting, I am sending you this message with more details.

Attached is a poster showing the skills of ME students you can apply to your challenges and a general project timeline that shows what time (amount and when) you expect the student to work in your lab.

Would you like ME students to contribute to your lab? To submit a project, you can use this link

Please fill in this form<https://forms.office.com/e/ptVVdY54yJ>

if you have UT credentials. If not, you can fill in the attached word document that is a copy of this form, send it to me and I will copy it in the form. The deadline for this is January 14.

Then there were 2 questions during the staff meeting:

1. What is the EC divide during the project, i.e. how much time can they really spend on the project?
The BSc assignment has EC points both in the course ‘BSc assignment' (12 EC) and ‘Academic Research Skills’ (ARS, 5 EC). As you can see in the timeline in the poster, the BSc assignment runs through the entire semester but in the first 40%, the students also have courses and a wind tunnel project in parallel. During that time the student is getting acquainted with your assignment and is (being trained in) setting up a research proposal (part of ARS, ~3.5 EC, let’s say 2 EC of that is ’spent’ on understanding/reading up on your assignment). After the exams, they are almost full time on your assignment, apart from Societal Embedding that is also part of ARS for the remaining 1.5 EC. At the end of the assignment the students have to deliver a paper and a presentation and receive voluntary training for that. I would think the average student spends 2 EC on this.

In conclusion, I think the students will have 12 ECs worth of time to do work in your assignment, where the 5 ECs spent on ARS & other deliverables only contributes to their understanding and possibly to documentation.

2. How about IP, in particular the presentation of concepts not to be shown in public?
I have attached a Q&A document that hopefully answers all relevant questions. Please let me know if you have other questions.

Some of you have already sent me projects or discussed their plans with me - thanks for that! In general, if you have any questions or have doubts, please get in touch. I am always happy to have quick chats.

Cheers,

     Joris
