[staff-physics-and-astronomy-HL-UHD-UD] Announcement ECHO Awards 2024 - deadline for submitting nominations April 12th

Dear colleagues,

The VU is invited to submit nominations for the ECHO Awards 2024: an award for non-Western* students with a Dutch passport or a refugee background.
If you know an excellent student who meets the criteria for these awards (see: https://echo-net.nl/en/criteria/), we invite you to nominate them for these Awards.

ECHO Awards
Every year, ECHO, the Diversity Policy Expertise Centre, invites colleges and universities to nominate students for the ECHO Awards. Every year, the Vrije Universiteit van Amsterdam also proudly nominates students to ECHO for these beautiful awards.
Students eligible for an ECHO Award are successful Dutch students with a non-western or refugee background who stand out for their entrepreneurial attitude, organizational ability, active community involvement, and constructive approach to challenges related to exclusion.

Award categories
The ECHO Awards can be divided into several categories. Each category has an award attached to it, namely the:

  *   WO Award
  *   Law & Tax Award
  *   STEM Award
The VU may nominate 3 students for each award. In total, VU may therefore nominate a maximum of 9 students.

VU-wide internal selection round
Nominations are submitted by the faculty. Because the maximum of nominations per faculty is 2, a selection will be made by the faculty in case the number of candidates is higher.
Candidates for this selection by the faculty will be submitted by the programme Director and/or Coordinator through onderwijsbeleid.beta at vu.nl<mailto:onderwijsbeleid.beta at vu.nl> by Monday, April 15.

A completed nomination should consist of:

  *   Fully completed nomination form (For the nomination form, see the appendices. (Note: must be completed by the faculty contact person nominating the student, e.g., a lecturer, programme director, faculty director, or policy officer. Students should not fill in this form themselves!).
  *   A personal motivation letter from the nominated student (for ECHO's guidelines for the motivation letter, see the attachments to this e-mail).
  *   A CV of the nominated student.
Please, send me your nomination via email no later than Friday, April 12. I will send them to onderwijsbeleid.beta at vu.nl<mailto:onderwijsbeleid.beta at vu.nl> by Monday, April 15.

*For the definition of "non-Western", ECHO relies on the CBS framework: "Person with a migration background from one of the countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia (excluding Indonesia and Japan) or Turkey." Because the CBS bases its definition on a socio-economic approach and the work of ECHO is based on a social-cultural approach in the Dutch context, ECHO includes Indonesia and Japan in a "non-western" framework.
