Beste collega’s
De eerste maand van dit collegejaar vliegt voorbij. Uiteraard hebben we de bekende opstart perikelen gehad, maar die hebben we gelukkig overleefd. We zijn trots en tevreden dat we met behulp van jullie allemaal bijna 2400 trajecten via Onstage hebben afgerond.
In 2024-2025 zijn 1430 bachelor studenten en 1346 master studenten afgestudeerd. Dus als jullie de komende periode blije studenten in chique outfits met hun ouders en oma's en opa’s rond zien lopen, is de kans groot dat het “onze BETA afstudeerders” zijn.

Studieadviseurs Farmaceutisch-, Aard- en Levenswetenschappen
Het studiejaar is weer gestart en veel nieuwe studenten hebben inmiddels kennisgemaakt met de studieadviseurs tijdens een voorlichtingsmoment. We merken ook dat veel studenten een afspraak hebben gemaakt nadat zij meer over de studieadviseur te weten zijn gekomen tijdens de introductie. Voor eerstejaarsstudenten is de overgang van middelbare school naar universiteit vaak groot en veel studenten moeten wennen aan het tempo op de universiteit en aan de grote hoeveelheden stof. Voor studenten die hier tegenaan blijven lopen of wat ondersteuning kunnen gebruiken bij het studeren, biedt de VU verschillende trainingen<https://vu.nl/nl/student/trainingen/trainingen-voor-optimaal-studeren> aan. Het aanbod is recent vernieuwd.
Begin oktober gaat het team studieadviseurs van de Aard- en Levenswetenschappen de Snelwijzers voor de eerstejaars, tweedejaars, derde- en hogerejaars studenten verspreiden via de opleidingen. Graag willen we jullie vragen om de studenten hierop te wijzen zodat ze weten wat er speelt in hun studiejaar (denk bijvoorbeeld aan informatie over BSA, minoren of studentenwelzijn) en waar ze terecht kunnen bij vragen.

Studeren met functiebeperking
Studenten kunnen aangeven dat zij vanwege een (niet-zichtbare) functiebeperking voorzieningen nodig hebben. De meest voorkomende toegekende voorzieningen zijn ‘extra tijd bij tentamens’ en het maken van ‘tentamens in de voorzieningenzaal’. Daarnaast zijn er ook studenten die andere voorzieningen nodig hebben, denk aan een individuele tentamenruimte, 100% extra tijd (bijv. vanwege een zichtbeperking) of een liftpas.
Ons verzoek aan jullie; mocht je in je groep een student hebben met een functiebeperking die ergens tegen aanloopt of aanpassingen nodig heeft, adviseer de student dan zeker om contact op te nemen met de studieadviseur en aarzel vooral zelf ook niet om ons te benaderen om een situatie te bespreken of advies te vragen. Op die manier kunnen we studenten zo goed mogelijk ondersteunen (daar waar mogelijk) en mogelijke klachten of ingewikkelde situaties zoveel mogelijk voorkomen. Helpmatrix
We wijzen jullie graag op de helpmatrix (voor studenten<https://vu.nl/nl/student/contact-en-studentbegeleiding>, te vinden in de tekst, en medewerkers<https://vu.nl/nl/medewerker/hulp-steun-en-advies>, te vinden onder de tegels) voor een handig overzicht van personen en afdelingen binnen de VU zodat je weet bij wie je terecht kunt. Voel je vrij deze te verspreiden onder de mensen die je kent en hier behoefte aan hebben.

Eindbeoordelingen i.v.m. afstuderen in 2024-2025
De deadline voor het aanleveren van de laatste cijfers van studenten was 31 augustus, in verband met het tijdig afstuderen. Echter, resultaten die in september worden aangeleverd worden bij uitzondering ook nog verwerkt in studiejaar 2024-2025, mits de beoordelingsdatum op uiterlijk 31 augustus staat. Mochten er nog eindbeoordelingen zijn die in studiejaar 2024-2025 moeten worden verwerkt dan is het dus belangrijk om die zo snel mogelijk, maar uiterlijk 26 september via OnStage in te dienen. In het geval een student niet in OnStage staat, dien dan alsjeblieft het resultaat zo snel mogelijk in bij resultaten.beta at vu.nl<mailto:resultaten.beta at vu.nl>. Graag willen we hierbij ook benadrukken dat dit mailadres alleen voor intern gebruik is bedoeld en niet voor studenten.

Uitreikingen
De data van de uitreikingen die plaats vinden in het najaar 2025 zijn gedeeld op vu.nl. Studenten kunnen hier<https://vu.nl/nl/student/afstuderen-en-diploma/afstudeerstatus-en-diploma-uitreiking#beta> zelf alvast kijken op welke dag de uitreiking van hun opleiding is.
Ongeveer 3 weken voor de uitreiking ontvangen studenten een uitnodiging met tijdstip.
Belangrijk; alleen studenten die afstuderen op 31 augustus 2025 of eerder, kunnen meedoen aan de uitreikingen in het najaar 2025. 

Klaarzetten/opsturen tentamens Periode 1
Graag vragen wij docenten/examinatoren de deadline voor tentamens/deeltoetsen in de gaten te houden. Voor digitale tentamens ontvangen we de informatie graag twee weken voor de tentamendatum, dat geeft ons de gelegenheid alles na te lopen en de relevante back offices te informeren.
Als het tentamen of de deeltoets schriftelijk op een externe locatie is verzoeken wij vriendelijk dit als PDF uiterlijk 10 werkdagen voor het tentamen toe te sturen, wij zorgen dan voor voldoende geprinte exemplaren. Indien het tentamen schriftelijk on campus is vragen wij om het PDF 10 werkdagen voor het tentamen toe te sturen. Dit is optioneel, zelf printen van tentamens on campus is ook mogelijk. In dat geval kun je het ofwel 5 werkdagen voorafgaand geprint bij ons aanleveren, ofwel voor de start van het tentamen zelf bij de locatie aanleveren.

Voorbereiding tentamens van januari 2026
Vanwege de kerstvakantie van 20 december t/m 4 januari zal ook de Tentamenorganisatie afwezig zijn. Om deze reden zal de uitvraag rondom Periode 1 hertentamens die in januari 2026 plaatsvinden anders zijn dan jullie van ons gewend zijn. De tijd tot aan de deadline is korter, namelijk uiterlijk op 1 december 2025.

Instroom & inschrijvingen Bèta
Op 4 september zijn de instroom- en inschrijvingsgegevens van de faculteit verspreid. De weken hierna zijn er nog een aantal inschrijvingen bijgekomen en beëindigd. Hieronder zie je de huidige stand van zaken van alle reguliere inschrijvingen (inclusief deeltijd/duaal en de UvA joint degree studenten). Lijsten met studentgegevens zijn gedeeld met de betreffende opleidingscoördinator en de studieadviseurs, inclusief informatie over de studievoortgang en specialisatie intekeningen. Deze lijsten worden binnenkort bijgewerkt om de nieuwe en beëindigde inschrijvingen te verwerken. BSA 2024-2025
Een analyse van de BSA statussen per Bèta bacheloropleiding is gedeeld met de BSA-commissie, de opleidingen, de studieadviseurs en het MTO. 16% van de eerstejaarsstudenten stopte gedurende het collegejaar, 10% kreeg een negatief BSA, 68% een positief BSA en 6% kreeg een verlenging. Deze percentages liggen dicht tegen die van het voorgaande jaar aan. Op opleidingsniveau zijn er wel wat verschillen met vorig jaar; voor AED, BIO, FAR en MAT in de vorm van meer positieve adviezen, voor AI meer negatieve adviezen, en voor BA meer verlengers. Onstage
Academisch jaar 24/25 is zo goed als volledig verwerkt in Onstage en wij zijn erg tevreden met de resultaten. Veel is er goed gegaan, maar er is nog ruimte voor verbetering. Wij zijn al met een aantal opleidingen in gesprek hoe het gebruik van Onstage voor hun is vergaan en wat er beter kan. Dit gaan wij met alle opleidingen doen en wij zetten dan direct alles goed en klaar voor dit academische jaar.
Daarnaast organiseren wij op 7 oktober tussen 15-17 een kick-off bijeenkomst voor 25/26 en alle stagecoördinatoren en andere nauw betrokkenen bij het stageproces zijn welkom. Nieuwe feature in Canvas beschikbaar Discussion Checkpoints
De nieuwe Discussion Checkpoins feature is vanaf nu beschikbaar in Canvas. Deze feature in Canvas maakt het mogelijk om aparte deadlines in te stellen en afzonderlijke punten toe te kennen voor de initiële bijdrage en de reacties op anderen. Deze functionaliteit is vooral geschikt voor discussies waarbij de docent studenten wil stimuleren om op verschillende momenten actief deel te nemen. Curriculum 2026-2027
Er is/wordt heel hard gewerkt aan de curricula van de Bèta opleidingen voor het academisch jaar 2026-2027. Volgende week zal bericht uitgestuurd worden over de start curriculumuitvraag 2026-2027 om wijzigingen via UAS (UAS.vu.nl) door te geven. Vragen? Oproep International Student Ambassadors Programme
Het International Office roept coördinatoren van Engelstalige opleidingen op om hun studenten via Canvas uit te nodigen om International Student Ambassador te worden. Het programma brengt huidige internationale studenten (ambassadeurs) in contact met toekomstige internationale studenten via open dagen, campusrondleidingen en ons platform waar toekomstige studenten vragen kunnen stellen aan studenten over het aanmeldingsproces en het studentenleven aan de VU Amsterdam. In de bijlage aan deze nieuwsbrief staat het volledige bericht van het International Office, inclusief een tekst voor de studenten, die op Canvas geplaatst kan worden. Dear colleagues,
The first month of this academic year is flying by. Of course, we had the usual teething problems, but fortunately we survived them. We are proud and satisfied that, with the help of all of you, we have completed almost 2400 products via Onstage. This year 1430 Bachelor students and 1346 master students graduated.  So if you see happy well dressed students walking around campus with their parents and grandparents in the coming period, these are probably our BETA graduates.

Academic Advisors Pharmaceutical, Earth and Life Sciences
The academic year has started again, and many new students have already met the academic advisors during an introduction session. We also notice that many students have made an appointment after learning more about the academic advisor during the introduction. For first-year students, the transition from high school to university is often large and many students still have to get used to the pace and the large amounts of material. For students who could use some support with studying, VU offers several workshops<https://vu.nl/en/student/training/courses-to-optimize-studying>. The programme was recently renewed.
Additionally, in October the academic advisors team of Earth and Life Sciences study programmes are sharing the Quick Guides for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and upper years students on Canvas. We would like to ask you to point these out to students so that they know what is going on in their year of study (for example, information about BSA, minors or student wellbeing) and where they can go for questions.

Studying with a disability
Students can indicate that they need facilities due to a (non-visible) disability. The most common facilities granted are "extra time during exams" and taking "exams in the facilities room”. In addition, there are also students who need other facilities, such as an individual examination room, 100% extra time (e.g. because of a sight limitation) or an elevator pass.
Our request to you; if you have a student in your group with a disability who runs into difficulties or needs adjustments, please advise the student to contact the academic advisor and do not hesitate to approach us to discuss a situation or to ask for advice. In this way we can support students as best we can (where possible) and prevent possible complaints or complex situations as much as possible. Final grades for graduation in 2024-2025
The deadline for submitting the final grades of students was August 31, for them to graduate on time. However, results submitted in September will also be processed in academic year 2024-2025, provided the assessment date is no later than 31 August. If there are still final assessments that need to be processed in the academic year 2024-2025, it is therefore important to submit them via OnStage as soon as possible, but no later than 26 September. If a student is not listed in OnStage, please submit the results as soon as possible to resultaten.beta at vu.nl<mailto:resultaten.beta at vu.nl>. We would also like to remind you that this email address is for internal use only and not for students.

Graduation ceremonies
The dates for the graduation ceremonies for fall 2025 have been shared on vu.nl. Students can check here<https://vu.nl/en/student/graduation-and-diploma/graduation-status-and-ceremony> to see which day the ceremony of their study program will take place.
About 3 weeks before the ceremony students will receive an invitation with the exact time.
Important; only students graduating on August 31, 2025 or earlier can participate in the 2025 fall graduation ceremony. 

Preparing/sending exams Period 1
We kindly request examiners/teachers to keep an eye on the deadline for the exams/midterms. Digital exams must be ready two weeks before the exam date, which gives us the opportunity to check everything and inform the relevant back offices.
If the exam or partial test is written external, it is necessary that you send it to us as a PDF no later than 10 working days before the exam date, so that we can ensure that sufficient printed copies are available. If the exam is written on campus, printing is optional, but we still ask you to send us the PDF 10 working days before the exam date. If you choose to print it yourself, this is also possible for on campus examinations. In that case, you can either deliver it to us printed 5 working days in advance or deliver it to the location before the start of the examination itself.

Preparations for Exams January 2026
Due to the Christmas holidays from 20 December to 4 January, the Exam Organization will also be absent. For this reason, the questionnaire regarding the period 1 resits that will take place in January 2026 will be different from what you are used from us. The time until the deadline is shorter, namely December 1st 2025.

Enrolments Beta
Faculty enrolment numbers were distributed on September 4th. A number of registrations were added and terminated in the following weeks. Below is the current status of all regular enrolments (including part-time/dual and UvA joint degree students). Lists of student details have been shared with the respective program coordinators and study advisers, including information on study progress and specialization registrations. BSA 2024-2025
An analysis of the BSA statuses per Beta bachelor's programme has been shared with the BSA committee, the programmes, the study advisers, and the MTO. 16% of first-year students dropped out during the academic year, 10% received a negative BSA, 68% received a positive BSA and 6% received an extension. These percentages are close to those of the previous year. On the programme level, there are some differences with last year; for AED, BIO, FAR and MAT in terms of more positive statuses, for AI more negative statuses, and for BA there were more extensions. Onstage
Academic year 24/25 is almost fully processed in Onstage and we are very pleased with the results. Much has gone well, but there is still room for improvement. We are already talking to a number of programmes about how the use of Onstage has gone for them and what could be improved. We will do this with all programmes and we will then immediately put everything right and ready for this academic year.
We are also organising a kick-off meeting on 7 October between 15-17 for 25/26 and all internship coordinators and others closely involved in the internship process are welcome to attend. New feature available in Canvas Discussion Checkpoints
The new Discussion Checkpoints feature is now available in Canvas. This feature in Canvas makes it possible to set separate deadlines and award separate points for the initial contribution and responses to others. This functionality is particularly suitable for discussions in which the teacher wants to encourage students to actively participate at different times. Very hard work has been/is being done on the curricula of the Beta programmes for the academic year 2026-2027. Call for International Student Ambassadors Programme
The International Office is calling on coordinators of English-taught programmes to invite their students via Canvas to become International Student Ambassadors. The programme connects current international students (ambassadors) with prospective international students through open days, campus tours and our platform where prospective students can ask students about the application process and student life at VU Amsterdam. The attachment to this newsletter contains the full message from the International Office, including a text for students that can be posted on Canvas.
