Dear all,
On 16 June, the Executive Board of Amsterdam UMC took a proposed decision to concentrate patient care at the AMC site on Meibergdreef in Amsterdam by 2040 (with the exception of patient care provided at Imaging and Adore). Research, education & training, and commercialisation will remain at both sites. The Executive Board at VU University Amsterdam has been informed of this. On Tuesday 23 June, the proposed decision was shared with Amsterdam UMC staff.
The proposed decision follows an exploratory study into the future accommodation of Amsterdam UMC. Central to this study was the question: ‘How can Amsterdam UMC ensure that, even in 15 years’ time, it continues to provide the best possible care, conduct leading-edge research, apply that knowledge to benefit society through valorisation, and train the professionals of the future?’ VU Amsterdam was not involved in this exploration, but is in discussion with Amsterdam UMC regarding the outcome and its impact on the VU site on Boelelaan. For instance, VU Amsterdam has been invited to join a working group tasked with identifying potential uses for the VUmc site. The Faculties of Science and Behavioural and Movement Sciences will be represented in this working group, amongst others.
*Impact *
The proposed decision sets out a direction for the next 15 years, i.e. until 2040. Amsterdam UMC states that nothing will change in the short term for patients, Amsterdam UMC staff or students. Amsterdam UMC says it attaches great importance in this process to safeguarding the continuity and quality of education and research.
The proposed decision is now before Amsterdam UMC’s consultative bodies for advice. The Executive Board of Amsterdam UMC hopes to be able to take a final decision after the summer.
As soon as there are any new developments or further information becomes available, we will keep you informed. The Executive Board wishes to assure you that we remain fully committed to safeguarding the quality and progress of education and research throughout this process.
