Dear colleagues,

Over the past weeks, the situation in Iran has deteriorated severely, and we have been receiving reports of brutally suppressed demonstrations, disappearances, and executions. VU Amsterdam has (Iranian) students and staff members who are deeply affected by this news—or by the lack of news from family and loved ones back home. To help them find appropriate support, we have compiled an overview of the available resources.

Guidance and support
Staff:

  *   PhD candidates can contact their supervisor or the PhD psychologist and find more information on this<https://vu.nl/en/research/more-about/help-support-and-advice-for-phd-candidates> page.

Students:

  *   Students can contact programme’s study adviser<https://vu.nl/en/student/contact-student-guidance-and-support/academic-advisor?utm_source=smc&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=20230207+-+Turkey%2FSyria_test&utm_content=studieadviseur&utm_term=> if the situation may affect their academic performance. All conversations are confidential. If the academic adviser cannot provide immediate assistance, they can often refer the student to another person or organization within or outside VU Amsterdam for further guidance or support.
  *   Students can visit the student psychological counsellor<https://vu.nl/en/student/contact-student-guidance-and-support/student-psychological-counsellor?utm_source=smc&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=20230207+-+Turkey%2FSyria_test&utm_content=studentenpsycholoog&utm_term=> during consultation hours. All counsellors are bound by a strict code of confidentiality.
  *   Students can visit our physical Student Wellbeing Point<https://vu.nl/en/student/student-wellbeing/student-wellbeing-point?utm_source=smc&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=20230207+-+Turkey%2FSyria_test&utm_content=Student+Wellbeing+Point&utm_term=> (VU Main Building, next to the Student Desk) for a listening ear or help with referrals.
  *   Students experiencing acute financial difficulties can apply to the VU Emergency Fund<https://vu.nl/en/student/finances/vu-emergency-fund>.
  *   Students who encounter financial difficulties due to the blocking of international payment systems can contact the Tuition Fee Consultation Hour<https://vu.nl/en/student/finances/tuition-fee-consultation-hour> (Collegegeldspreekuur). For other types of financial questions, student deans can provide support.
  *   Students who wish to speak to someone anonymously can contact the so-called “Luisterlijn” (Listening Line). This service is available 24/7 via deluisterlijn.nl or +31 88 0767 000<tel:+31880767000> (also available in English).
  *   Finally, 3D<https://vu.nl/en/about-vu/organisations/3d> and NEWConnective<https://vu.nl/en/about-vu/organisations/newconnective> organize meetings with and for students. They have already organized an initial meeting about Iran and are open to organizing more.
