[staff-physics-and-astronomy-HL-UHD-UD] Nominations De Jonge Akademie

Dear all,
Late last week, the KNAW called for nominations of candidates for “De Jonge Akademie” (DJA) (The Young Academy), for appointments starting on April 1st, 2026. With this email, I would like to inform you about the conditions for nomination, and the VU internal selection process.
Membership of De Jonge Akademie (DJA) in short
- Members share a deeply felt passion for science and a desire to share it with society. This is translated into an active commitment to DJA's objectives and thus the value of science and a better science system;
- Derived from this: members have enthusiasm for science policy, science and society, interdisciplinary collaboration or internationalisation;
- In addition to their membership of the DJA, members have a strong involvement in the forum and advisory function of the KNAW.

Important nomination conditions
For full and comprehensive conditions, please read the attached regulations - in Dutch - especially article 5)
Eligible for nomination are young researchers who:
- Have emphatically distinguished themselves scientifically;
- Have obtained their PhD less than 10 years ago (at the start of membership on 1 April in the year in question. An extension rule applies to this, see the rules and regulations attached or this link<https://www.knaw.nl/reglementen-fondsen-en-prijzen/extensieregeling-knaw>)
- Nominees have time to be actively involved in DJA.

Process and internal selection
The VU can nominate 3 pairs of one man and one woman (for every female candidate, a male candidate should also be nominated and vice versa - or a candidate who does not identify with either of these two categories). Our faculty may nominate 4 candidates. This nomination does not have to be a full proposal but should give enough idea of the candidate so that a considered selection can be made by the deans. The composition of the three duos will include spread across disciplines and diversity of candidates.
