Together more than the sum of its parts
A hammock in which physically handicapped people can rock back and forth. They operate it by opening their mouths. What a creative solution to the problem with which a nursing home in the city of Amstelveen knocked on the door of the brand-new CreaTe (Creative Technology) course at VU Amsterdam. Physically handicapped people love to be rocked and the carers love to do that, but it is time-consuming. Couldn't the students come up with something for that? And they could indeed. A prototype of the result was on display during the VU-UT Working Visit on 18 April, where CreaTe was in the spotlight. Margrethe Jonkman, chairperson of the Executive Board at VU Amsterdam, was happy to test out the hammock. The results of the VU-UT collaboration also surprised in other areas. For instance, in her opening presentation, Jonkman showed that VU Amsterdam and UT researchers have developed the first virtual rowing machine on which more people can train worldwide. Good for sports and good for further research. And what about a study on loneliness at school, with students being monitored with a smartwatch? Together, we really are more than the sum of our parts. So nice that the Steering Committee has decided to fund a new series of joint projects. We look forward to the results, about which more on a future working visits, no doubt.

Twelve new research projects VU-UT honoured
The VU-UT Steering Committee has decided to honour 12 proposals under the Internal Call. This call was launched earlier this year to stimulate collaboration between groups of VU-UT researchers. Each honoured project will receive €40,000 to elaborate the plans. The high quality of all 37 proposals made the choice difficult. Because of the available budget, the Steering Committee nevertheless had to make a selection. It took into account whether groups had received funding before, the distribution across the faculties in both universities and the involvement of lecturers in joint programmes. Additional funds from the budget were made available, allowing two additional proposals to be honoured compared to the original plan. All those involved have since been notified.

Creating Secure Societies participates in major project on crises
As many as 10 VU Amsterdam and UT researchers are participating in the Adapt! Consortium. Over the next ten years, this consortium will investigate which cultural, social and policy capacities are needed to cope with major crises. It will receive an Dutch Research Council (NWO) Gravity Grant of EUR 23 million for this purpose. Adapt! aims to contribute to how communities can give meaning to adversity, while maintaining connection and solidarity, and how governments can encourage this.

Successful working visit VU-UT with CreaTe in the spotlight
An app that gives young people a personalised tour of the Rijksmuseum after some swiping back and forth, a talking computer that looks up the right wine for you, a dishwasher that rewards you when you use it well and a hammock in which physically handicapped people can rock back and forth. At the CreaTe (Creative Technology) demo market during the VU-UT working visit on 18 April, there was plenty to see what students are already capable of halfway through their first year of study.

Hack4Her empowers women in technology
From 7 to 9 June, the third edition of Hack4Her will take place. Hack4Her is an annual event aimed at empowering women in technology. They can participate in the Hackathon track in a competitive coding environment designed exclusively for them. The Non-Hackathon track is open to everyone. Hack4Her offers workshops, projects, lectures, ample networking opportunities and free food and drinks. Hack4Her is a collaboration between VU Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam and also explicitly invites (academic) professionals to participate. For example, for the networking event on Friday evening 7 June or to lead a workshop.

Appreciated LinkedIn training during VU-UT working visit
During the VU-UT working visit on 18 April, a LinkedIn training was provided for the participants of the research coalitions. The training covered the basics of LinkedIn and also focused on useful tips and tricks to increase your reach within LinkedIn. The algorithm determines who sees your posts and which posts you see. The algorithm revolves around three pillars: identity (who are you, where do you work, who is in your network), behaviour (what have you liked recently, with whom do you have the most interaction, what news do you prefer to read) and content (how many likes does your post have, how often has it been viewed, what is it about and how topical is it). During the training, participants wrote and posted their own posts and discussed their approach and obstacles. The training was well appreciated and, according to many participants, tasted like more.

Samen meer dan de som der delen
Een hangmat waarin lichamelijk beperkte mensen heen-en-weer kunnen schommelen. Ze bedienen deze door hun mond open te doen. Wat een creatieve oplossing voor het probleem waarmee een tehuis in Amstelveen aanklopte bij de kersverse opleiding CreaTe (Creative Technology) aan de VU. Lichamelijk beperkte mensen houden ervan geschommeld te worden en dat doen de verzorgenden met alle liefde, maar het is wel tijdrovend. Konden de studenten daar niet iets voor bedenken? En dat konden ze. Een prototype van het resultaat was te zien tijdens het Werkbezoek VU-UT op 18 april, waar CreaTe in het zonnetje stond. Margrethe Jonkman, voorzitter van het CvB bij de VU, testte de hangmat graag uit. Ook op andere vlakken verrasten de resultaten van de samenwerking. Zo liet de CvB-voorzitter in haar openingspresentatie zien dat VU- en UT-onderzoekers de eerste virtuele roeimachine hebben ontwikkeld waar je wereldwijd met meer personen op kunt trainen. Goed om op te sporten én goed voor verdere research. En wat te denken van een onderzoek naar eenzaamheid op school, met leerlingen die met een smartwatch worden gevolgd? Samen zijn we echt meer dan de som der delen. Mooi dus dat de Stuurgroep besloten heeft een nieuwe reeks gezamenlijke projecten te financieren. We verheugen ons op de resultaten, waarover op een volgend werkbezoek ongetwijfeld meer.

Twaalf nieuwe onderzoeksprojecten VU-UT gehonoreerd
De Stuurgroep VU-UT heeft besloten 12 voorstellen te honoreren in het kader van de Interne Call. Deze call is eerder dit jaar uitgezet om de samenwerking tussen groepen onderzoekers VU en UT te stimuleren. Ieder gehonoreerd project krijgt € 40.000 om de plannen uit te werken. De hoge kwaliteit van alle 37 voorstellen maakte de keuze lastig. Vanwege het beschikbare budget heeft de Stuurgroep toch een selectie moeten maken. Daarbij is meegewogen of groepen al eerder budget hebben ontvangen, de spreiding over de faculteiten in beide universiteiten en de betrokkenheid van docenten in gezamenlijke opleidingen. Uit de begroting is extra geld ter beschikking gesteld, waardoor twee extra voorstellen gehonoreerd konden worden ten opzichte van het oorspronkelijke plan. Alle betrokkenen hebben inmiddels bericht gehad.

Creating Secure Societies neemt deel aan groot Zwaartekrachtproject
Maar liefst 10 VU en UT onderzoekers participeren in het Adapt! Consortium. Dit consortium onderzoekt de komende tien jaar welke culturele, sociaal-maatschappelijke en beleidsmatige capaciteiten nodig zijn om grote crises het hoofd te bieden. Zij krijgt hiervoor een NWO Zwaartekracht-subsidie van 23 miljoen euro. Adapt! wil een bijdrage leveren aan hoe gemeenschappen betekenis kunnen geven aan tegenslag, daarbij verbinding en solidariteit kunnen behouden en hoe overheden dit kunnen stimuleren.

Geslaagd werkbezoek VU-UT met CreaTe in het zonnetje
Een app waarmee jongeren na wat heen-en-weer swipen een gepersonaliseerde rondleiding krijgen door het Rijksmuseum, een sprekende computer die de juiste wijn voor je opzoekt,  een afwasmachine die je beloont als je hem goed gebruikt en een hangmat waarin lichamelijk beperkte mensen heen-en-weer kunnen schommelen. Hack4Her versterkt vrouwen in de technologie
Van 7 t/m 9 juni vindt de derde editie plaats van Hack4Her, een jaarlijks event dat zich richt op het versterken van vrouwen in de technologie. Zij kunnen in de Hackathon track deelnemen aan een exclusief voor hen ontworpen competitieve codeeromgeving. De Non-Hackathon track staat open voor iedereen. Hack4Her biedt workshops, projecten, lezingen, ruime netwerkmogelijkheden en gratis eten en drinken. Hack4Her is een samenwerking tussen de VU en de UvA en nodigt (academische) professionals ook nadrukkelijk uit om deel te nemen. Bijvoorbeeld voor het netwerkevenement op vrijdagavond 7 juni of voor het leiden van een workshop.

Gewaardeerde LinkedIn training tijdens VU-UT werkbezoek
Tijdens het VU- UT werkbezoek op 23 april is er voor de deelnemers aan de onderzoekscoalities een LinkedIn training verzorgd. Daarin kwam de basis van LinkedIn aan de orde en was er aandacht voor handige tips en trucs om je bereik binnen LinkedIn te vergroten. Het algoritme bepaalt wie jouw posts ziet en welke posts jij ziet. Het algoritme draait om drie pilaren: identiteit (wie ben je, waar werk je, wie zit er in je netwerk), gedrag (wat heb je recent geliked, met wie heb je de meeste interactie, welk nieuws lees je het liefst) en content (hoeveel likes heeft je post, hoe vaak is deze  bekeken, waar gaat het over en hoe actueel is het). Tijdens de training schreven en plaatsten de deelnemers een eigen post en bespraken ze met elkaar hun aanpak en hindernissen. De training werd goed gewaardeerd en smaakte volgens veel deelnemers naar meer.
