W&N in beweging

W&N-zine is er voor alle gebruikers van het W&N gebouw. Het gebouw wordt gesloopt omdat het technisch verouderd is en niet meer voldoet aan hedendaagse functionele en ruimtelijke eisen voor ons hoogwaardig onderzoek en onderwijs. Alle afdelingen uit W&N verhuizen naar een nieuwe plek op de campus. En dat moment komt steeds dichterbij.
Wat is de status van de ontwikkelingen? Waar gaan afdelingen uit W&N heen en wat komt hier vanuit verschillende perspectieven allemaal bij kijken? Van bouwtechnische zaken en verhuistips tot leuke en handige feiten over de nieuwe gebouwen en wat W&N in al die 60 jaren trouwe dienst heeft gebracht en niet vergeten mag worden. Deze editie staat in het teken van de sloop van het W&N gebouw.
Sloop W&N gebouw
De sloop van een gebouw als W&N (106.000 m2) met alle uiteenlopende faciliteiten - zoals naast werkplekken ook labs, werkplaatsen, onderwijsruimten, kas en cyclotron - vraagt om grondige voorbereiding. Het ‘Programmateam Sloop W&N’ werkt hier onder leiding van programmamanager Frank Uijting inmiddels enkele jaren aan. Het programma bestaat uit diverse deelprojecten met ook weer bijbehorende teams. Denk aan ontmanteling van kabels en leidingen, ontmanteling van het cyclotron en het - als onderdeel van de sloop - tijdelijk huisvesten van afdelingen voorafgaand aan de verhuizing naar het verbouwde AB deel.
Sloopproces
Projectleider Bram Kroon begeleidt het traject van de daadwerkelijke sloop van het gebouw. Hoe ziet dit proces eruit? De sloop gaat gefaseerd plaatsvinden, waarbij veiligheid voor medewerkers, studenten, omwonenden en direct betrokkenen voorop staat. Dat geldt ook voor het omgaan met overlast van de sloop, die er op bepaalde momenten zal zijn. Communicatie hierover zal zorgvuldig en tijdig plaatsvinden.
Er wordt bij de sloop van buiten naar binnen gewerkt: eerst worden de buitenste gebouwdelen CDE en VWXYZ gesloopt (het AB deel blijft staan en wordt verbouwd). Ook vleugel F wordt gesloopt. Het middendeel (GKNM+PQR+H) blijft tijdelijk staan omdat hier als tussenstap bepaalde bèta-groepen wordt gehuisvest die later doorverhuizen naar hun definitieve plek in voornamelijk het verbouwde AB deel. En een deel van de werkplaatsen blijft gehandhaafd in deze vleugels.
De sloop is verdeeld in de volgende fases, in volgorde van het te volgen tijdspad:
1. zogenaamde ‘sloopknip’ in de bekabeling onder de grond maken zodat de gebouwdelen CDE, de kas en de gebouwdelen VWXYZ verwijderd kunnen worden;
2. sloop van de gebouwdelen CDE, kas en gebouwdelen VWXYZ;
3. van binnen leegstrippen van de gebouwdelen O, T, U en het RNC;
4. van binnen leegstrippen van de gebouwdelen GKNM, PQR, H, F, S en de DigiTent;
5. totaalsloop exclusief de kelders;
6. sloop van de kelders inclusief het opvullen daarvan;
7. bouwrijp opleveren van de grond en overdracht aan de gemeente.
Naar verwachting vinden medio 2024 de eerste zichtbare voorbereidende handelingen voor de sloop plaats. De fasegewijze aanpak loopt vanaf dan van 2024 tot en met 2028. Start van de daadwerkelijke sloop is van een aantal bewegingen afhankelijk, waaronder het ontmantelen van het cyclotron en de start van de verhuizing van afdelingen uit W&N naar Onderzoeksgebouw VU. In 2028 wordt het kavel waar nu het W&N gebouw staat bouwrijp opgeleverd aan de gemeente. Op deze plek komen uiteindelijk de voetbalvelden van sc Buitenveldert.

Op dit moment is het projectteam sloop bezig met de uitwerking van de bouwlogistiek voor de aan- en afvoer voor de sloop en de verbouw van het AB deel. Na de zomer ontvang je hier meer informatie over.
Ontmanteling cyclotron
[Image removed by sender.]Een van de onderdelen van de sloop is de ontmanteling van het cyclotron. Cyclotrons zijn noodzakelijk voor de productie van medische isotopen, die worden gebruikt in de strijd tegen kanker. VU Amsterdam huisvest vier cyclotrons in W&N, waarvan er drie zijn verkocht en één (Philips cyclotron) wordt verwijderd. De productie van drie van de vier cyclotrons is al overgenomen door het Imaging Center Amsterdam UMC. Alleen de koppeling naar de labs waar de isotopen gereed gemaakt worden voor commercieel gebruik (voornamelijk voor diagnose van kanker) is nog niet volledig in gebruik. Nadat ook dit volledig functioneert, kan de definitieve ontmanteling starten.
De projectleider van de ontmanteling, Marten van Til, legt samen met stralingsdeskundige Andy van Driel uit hoe dit straks gaat gebeuren. “Voor de ontmanteling van het cyclotron hebben we drie uitgangspunten bepaald. Zo vindt de ontmanteling plaats:
* volgens de strengste en meest recente veiligheidsnormen: met een speciale door ANVS (Autoriteit Nucleaire Veiligheid en Stralingsbescherming) verstrekte vergunning;
* binnen aanvaardbare kosten;
* op maatschappelijk relevante en economisch verantwoord wijze: het licht geactiveerde beton wordt door de verwerker vanuit duurzaamheidsoverwegingen verwerkt tot nieuwe grondstof. Van dit gerecyclede materiaal wordt nieuw samengesteld beton gemaakt. Deze manier van produceren leidt tot significant minder CO2 uitstoot. Het nieuwe beton wordt gebruikt voor onder andere dijkverzwaring en fundering.”
Waar staan we nu in het proces van ontmanteling?
1. het eerste cyclotron is uitgegaan in mei en het tweede cyclotron in juni dit jaar;
het derde cyclotron is nog in gebruik en gaat naar verwachting eind september a.s. uit;
het Philips cyclotron is niet meer in gebruik en wordt na ontmanteling opgeslagen bij COVRA;
2. de drie cyclotrons worden eind 2023/begin 2024 uit het gebouw gehesen en verhuizen naar hun nieuwe eigenaar;
3. het gebouw wordt na grondige schoonmaak en inspectie vrijgegeven aan VU FCO;
4. daarna kan de sloop (volgens de dan verstrekte vergunning door ANVS) beginnen. Naar verwachting is dit in de tweede helft van 2024.

Ontwikkelingen
Het definitieve ontwerp van het te verbouwen AB deel is in de afrondende fase en de voorbereidingen voor de vergunningsaanvraag voor de gevel zijn opgestart. Zodra dit definitief is, delen we in W&N-zine impressies van het ontwerp van het gebouw.
Wat betreft Onderzoeksgebouw VU wordt momenteel de buitengevel afgemaakt. Na de zomer worden de nutsvoorzieningen aangesloten en gaat de gemeente het voorterrein aan De Boelelaan inrichten. Binnen wordt volop gewerkt aan het installeren van de labs inclusief benodigde technische voorzieningen, de kantooromgevingen en algemene ruimten. Tegelijkertijd werken onze huisvestingsadviseurs binnen het thema ‘connecting the dots’ de plakfolies voor de ramen van vergaderruimtes uit. Door het implementatieteam wordt hard gewerkt aan voorbereidingen voor alle facilitaire zaken voor de ingebruikname. Zo is onlangs de inkoop van het meubilair afgerond. Wie gaat waarheen?
De Bètafaculteit is en wordt grotendeels verspreid over het O|2 Labgebouw, het Nieuwe Universiteitsgebouw, Onderzoeksgebouw VU en het verbouwde AB deel van W&N. Maar ook voorzieningen als de Spar, Amsterdam Venture Studios en Demonstrator Lab, studieverenigingen, werkplaatsen, 3D (debat, dialoog en diversiteit), logistiek en opslagruimtes gaan verhuizen.

Verhuiscoaches Ellen Duijnhouwer en Renee Kool hebben al diverse afdelingen geholpen met het voorbereiden én daadwerkelijk opruimen. Ze werken volgens een effectieve methode waarbij het doel is om met de juiste materialen zo prettig mogelijk in de nieuwe ruimtes te kunnen werken.
Renee: “Met de groep bepalen we eerst de criteria om dingen te bewaren. Voor alle op te ruimen materialen of het nu gaat om boeken, tentamens, dossiers of andere materialen, formuleren we richtlijnen om iets te bewaren of niet.”
Ellen: “Samen maken we een plan en helpen het ook uit te voeren. De eerder bepaalde criteria zijn daarbij leidend. Je behoudt van elk proefschrift bijvoorbeeld één exemplaar in een centrale boekenkast. Op deze manier sorteren de medewerkers alle ruimtes.”
Tip van de maand: een dag ‘opruimen’ onder begeleiding van de verhuiscoaches heeft direct effect omdat je samen ook echt aan de slag gaat. En zoals uit het interview met het UPC (eerste editie W&N-zine) al bleek, het is meteen een trip down memorylane.
De verhuizing komt steeds dichterbij. Het is dan ook belangrijk nu te beginnen met opruimen én te voorkomen dat je geen nieuwe ballast voor straks creëert. Praktische informatie
[Image removed by sender.]Logistiek verhuist naar Transitorium
De afdeling logistiek verhuist naar het Transitorium. Om dit mogelijk te maken, wordt momenteel een deel van het Transitorium verbouwd. De verhuizing vanuit het W&N gebouw vindt op 13 en 14 juli plaats. Als gebruiker merk je hier weinig van, behalve dat de afdeling inclusief de postkamer op vrijdag 14 juli om 16.00 uur dichtgaat. Maandag 17 juli is alles operationeel.
De opslag van logistiek, waaronder de beveiligde opslag (chemicaliën, tentamens etc.) verhuist naar verdieping -2 in het Transitorium. Vanaf de verhuizing op 17 juli is het niet meer mogelijk om zelf labchemicaliën af te halen, deze worden alleen nog bezorgd.
Logistiek is op de nieuwe locatie te bereiken via de ingang op de Van der Boechorststraat 3. Dit wordt goed aangegeven voor bezoekers. Leveranciers kunnen via de logistieke straat (achter het Transitorium) bij de afdeling komen.

W&N on the move
Edition 2 - 29 June 2023
The W&N zine is created for all users of the W&N building. The building will be demolished because it is technically outdated and no longer complies with the current functional and spatial requirements of our high-level research and education. All W&N departments will be relocating to new housing on campus. It’s almost time.
What is the status of the developments? Where will the W&N departments move to and what is involved based on various points of view? From structural matters and moving tips, to fun and handy facts about the new buildings, and more about the old building’s 60 years of faithful service that should not be forgotten. This edition is dedicated to the demolition of the W&N building.
Demolition of W&N building
The demolition of a building such as the W&N (106.000 m2) with its wide range of facilities such as labs, teaching rooms, greenhouse and cyclotron, in addition to workstations, requires thorough preparation. The Programme Team for the W&N demolition has been preparing for the big day under the supervision of programme manager Frank Uijting for several years. The programme consists of various smaller teams for partial projects ranging from dismantling cables and pipes to the dismantling of the cyclotron, and, as part of the demolition project, preparations for the temporary relocation of practical education prior to the move to the renovated AB section.
Process of demolition
Project Manager Bram Kroon will be supervising the actual demolition process of the building. What will this process look like? The demolition will be carried out in phases, in which safety for employees, students, residents and those immediately involved will be prioritised. The same goes for handling the nuisance of the demolition, which will occur at certain moments. Communication about this will take place with care and in a timely manner.
The demolition work will be completed from the outside in: first, the outside building elements CDE and VWXYZ will be demolished (the AB part will remain and will be renovated). Wing F will also be demolished. The middle components (GKNM+PQR+H) will remain temporarily because the practical education of the Faculty of Science will be housed here in the interim. Part of the workshops are still maintained in these wings.
The demolition has been divided into the following stages, in order of the timeline to be followed:
1. subterranean disconnection of cabling and pipes for modular demolition, to facilitate the removal of building components CDE, the greenhouse and building components VWXYZ.
2. demolition of building components CDE, the greenhouse and building components VWXYZ;
3. stripping the insides of building components O, T, U and the RNC;
4. stripping the insides of building components GKNM, PQR, H, F, S, and the DigiTent;
5. total demolition with the exception of the basements;
6. demolition of the basements including filling them up;
7. ensuring the site is ready for construction and transfer to the municipality.
The first visible preparatory actions for the demolition are expected to take place in mid-2024. The phased approach is expected to last until 2028. The start of the actual demolition depends on a number of movements, including the dismantling of the cyclotron and the start of the relocation of departments from W&N to the VU Research Building. In 2028, the plot that now houses the W&N Building will be ready for construction and ownership will be transferred to the municipality. The plot will ultimately be turned into football fields for SC Buitenveldert.

The demolition project team is currenctly working on working out the construction logistics for the pipes for the demolition and renovation of the AB component. We will fill you in on this after the summer.
Decommissioning of the cyclotron
[Image removed by sender.]One of the components of the demolition process is the decommissioning of the cyclotron. Cyclotrons are necessary for the production of medical isotopes which are used to combat cancer. VU Amsterdam houses four cyclotrons at the W&N, three of which have now been sold and one will be removed (Philips cyclotron). The production of three of the four cyclotrons has already been taken over by Imaging Center Amsterdam UMC. Only the link to the labs where the isotopes are prepared for commercial use (mainly in the diagnosis of cancer) is not yet fully in use. Once this is fully functional, the final decommissioning process can begin.
The project leader for the decommissioning, Marten van Til, explains how this will be done exactly together with radiation expert Andy van Driel. “For the decommissioning of the cyclotron we have determined three key principles. The decommissioning will take place as follows:
* in accordance with the most stringent and most recent safety standards and with a special permit issued by the Authority for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection (ANVS);
* at an acceptable cost;
* in a socially relevant and economically-responsible manner: the light-activated concrete will be recycled by processor Pouw based on sustainability considerations. The recycled material will be used to make reconstituted concrete. This production process leads to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. The new concrete will be used in dike reinforcement and foundations for example.”
At what point in the decommissioning process are we now?
1. the first cyclotron was removed in May and the second cyclotron in June of this year;
the third cyclotron is still in use and is expected to be removed at the end of this September; the Philips cyclotron has already been decommissioned and is being stored at COVRA;
2. the three cyclotrons will be airlifted out of the building at the end of 2023/beginning of 2024 and transported to their new owner;
3. after a thorough cleaning and inspection, the building will be released to FCO VU;
4. demolition can then begin (in accordance with the provided ANVS permit). This work is expected to commence in the second half of 2024.

Milestones
The final design for the to be renovated AB part is in the final phase and the permit for the façade is almost ready for submission. Once this is finalised, we will share this impression (sketch) of the building.
Regarding the VU Research Building, the the external facade is currently being completed. After the summer, the utilities will be connected and the municipality will furnish the forecourt on De Boelelaan. Inside the building, work on installing the labs including the required technical facilities, the office environments and the general areas, is currently in full swing. At the same time, accommodations consultants are working on the ‘connecting the dots’ theme by designing adhesive film for the windows of the meeting rooms. The implementation team is working hard on preparations for all facility matters for the commissioning. For example, the purchase of the furniture was recently completed. More on this in the first newsletter after the summer.

On the move
Who will be going where?
The Faculty of Science is currently and will continue to be spread across campus buildings including the O|2 Lab Building, the New University Building, the VU Research Building and the renovated AB wing of the W&N building. Facilities such as the SPAR supermarket, Amsterdam Venture Studios and Demonstrator Lab, study associations, workshops, 3D (debate, dialogue and diversity), logistics, and storage rooms will also relocate.

Moving coaches Ellen Duijhower and Renee Kool (photo on the right) have already assisted various departments in the preparations for the move, including tidying up and packing. They are working in accordance with a simple but effective method and are supervising the process from start to finish.
Renee: "Criteria are first determined with the group to decide what needs to be kept or thrown out. Guidelines will be formulated for all materials that need to be packed or thrown out, from books, examinations, to files and other materials."
Ellen: “Together we will come up with a plan and execute it. The previously formulate guidelines are leading in this process. For example, you keep one copy of each doctoral thesis in a central bookshelf. Employees are tyding all the spaces in this way."
Tip of the month: a clean-up day under supervision of the moving coaches has an immediate effect because you get to put your shoulders to the wheel immediately together. And, as was already shown from the interview with UPC (first edition W&N zine); it is also a trip down memory lane.

[Image removed by sender.]Logistics moves to the Transitorium
The logistics centre will be moving to the Transitorium building. To make this possible, part of the Transitorium is currently being renovated. The relocation from the W&N Building is scheduled to take place on 13 and 14 July. As a user you will not really notice this is happening, except that the department including the mail room will close at 16.00 on Friday 14 July. Everything will be operational by Monday 17 July.
The storage of logistics, including secured storage (for chemicals, examinations, etc) will be moving to floor -2 in the Transitorium. From the date of the relocation on 17 July, you will no longer be able to pick up your own lab chemicals as these will only be delivered.
The new Logistics location is accessible via the entrance on Van der Boechorststraat 3. This will be clearly indicated for visitors. Suppliers can enter the department via the logistics street behind the Transitorium.
