Subject: [Managers BETA] Invitation for IVM event on Equality, Diverstiy and Inclusion

Dear VU colleague,

I am sending this invitation on behalf of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion team of the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM ED&I team) to spread this within your department, especially to colleagues who participating in a departmental committee on equality, diversity and/or inclusion and other colleagues who might be interested in the topic and the discussion.

The IVM ED&I team has been working over the past year on an Institute level project concerning Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. With the support of the management team and the participation of the staff of the Institute, the team have worked on 3 main themes ((1) Gender and LGBTQIA+; (2) Minoritized groups/topics; (3) Race and Ethnicity) and within each theme practical outcomes has been developed on how to be more diverse and inclusive in terms of teaching, research and workplace/management. This initiative has been quite successful over the past year and they managed to contact several stakeholders within and outside the VU to support the work, which made it clearer/more visible for our staff the several highly relevant initiatives the VU has in terms of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

The team want to share their work with other departments/institutes of the BETA faculty as well as the VU as a whole to inspire and sparkle discussions on how we can move towards a more diverse and inclusive academic system. Therefore, you are invited to attend the IVM ED&I event which will be a half-day afternoon event on the 14th of September named "Diversity and Inclusion as Means to Belong in Academia". You can find the Save the Date attached to this invite with information about this event.

The event will be open to all PhDs, staff members, and teaching assistants of the Faculty of Science and will be an interactive day with guest speakers and workshop discussions, aiming to showcase good practices and groups that work with diversity and inclusion at the VU and beyond.
Besides that, this event will showcase the IVM ED&I work over the past year and provide tips and tricks under the topics of:

  *   Gender and LGBTQIA+
  *   Minoritized groups/Topics
  *   Race and Ethnicity
We will also discuss the next steps and how we can integrate diversity and inclusion within teaching, research and workspace/management, and hopefully inspire other Departments/Institutes within the Faculty and the VU to develop similar projects or start discussions on the topic.
