Strong interest in working visit VU-UT
An in many ways sunny afternoon with plenty of inspiring encounters. This characterised the third VU Amsterdam-UT working visit, this time on 4 April on the campus of VU Amsterdam. Some 140 researchers, policy officers, lecturers and support staff shared knowledge, experience and ideas. The collaboration is growing and the plans for the future, which will see it through to 2030, are also taking shape. After all the mini-events, meetings, tours of the campus and the Zuidas, a visit to the DemonstratorLab of VU Amsterdam and presentations on the joint programmes, the visit ended with a buffet in the O2|Lab building that VU Amsterdam shares with the Amsterdam UMC. The next working visit will be in Twente on Wednesday 22 November.

Exploring 'Industrial Engineering and Management' at VU
The UT and VU Amsterdam are exploring the opportunities of starting the joint bachelor's programme 'Industrial Engineering and Management' (IEM) at VU Amsterdam. The bachelor's programme at UT has been successful for years. IEM is a technical programme open to VWO students with maths B in their profile. The programme combines engineering with business administration and graduates are involved in designing, analysing and controlling operations and systems for production and services. In this capacity, they form the bridge between idea and practice and create value for companies and society. A clear positioning within the VU School of Business and Economics is being considered for the new programme. For study-goers, it is important to communicate that this joint programme at VU Amsterdam will lead to a degree from the UT.

Aletta Kraneveld new dean and coalition leader
Aletta Kraneveld is the new dean of Faculty of Science of the VU Amsterdam from 1 December 2022 and, together with Joost Kok (UT), also the new coalition leader of the impact coalition Smart Societies. In both roles, she has taken over from Guus Schreiber. A further introduction to Aletta will follow in a future edition of the newsletter.

Abri campaign for CreaTe
In September 2023, the new joint bachelor's programme Creative Technology (CreaTe) will start at VU Amsterdam. In the weeks leading up to the bachelor's days, the VU-UT CreaTe marketing team ran an online and offline introduction campaign, mainly to publicise the fact that this programme is now also offered in Amsterdam. One of the expressions were advertising posters in bus and tram booths that could be seen in many places in the Randstad region during the week from 14 to 21 March. They were spotted by VU Amsterdam and UT colleagues, among others, in the heart of the cities of Amsterdam, Amersfoort, Haarlem, Hilversum and Zeist. The campaign led to an increase in visitors to the CreaTe website.

Creating Secure Societies over the line during VU-UT Work Visit
The impact coalition Creating Secure Societies (CSS) can look back on a successful programme during the VU Amsterdam-UT working visit on 4 April. There were presentations of the projects from the 2022 internal call, with topics such as 'effective training against social engineering threats' and 'policing in the metaverse against drug crime'. It was inspiring to see that the students involved were also given the floor. In the interactive afternoon session, VU Amsterdam and UT colleagues got to know each other better in the game 'over the line'. In subsequent speed dating sessions, participants were challenged to share their expertise and knowledge with colleagues, with playful 'Tony Awards' rewarding successful matches. On 22 November, CSS will again host a programme during the UT-VU Amsterdam Work Visit in Enschede.

Creative Technology @VU @UT – The Tram Booth
The start of the bachelor programme Creative Technology (CreaTe) in 2023 at VU Amsterdam is getting closer and closer. Project manager Alma Schaafstal is to set up the branch on behalf of the UT and regularly blogs about the ‘road to Amsterdam’. “Sometimes activities and milestones succeed each other faster than light and it is hard to choose. For example, we were at Open Days of VU Amsterdam for the second time and were faced with study seekers who travelled to both Twente and Amsterdam in one weekend to experience for themselves the difference between VU Amsterdam and UT.'

VU students and UT researchers measure impact VR exhibition
Sebastian Hirjoaba, Iris Roskam and Eser Berçin are bachelor students of the interdisciplinary minor Digital Humanities and Social Analytics at VU Amsterdam. They developed a user experience survey for VR at art exhibitions under the guidance of UT researchers Shenghui Wang and Delaram Javdani Rikhtehgar. The students visited the UT campus to experience an existing VR exhibition and determine the requirements for their research. They developed a self-report survey for users' subjective experiences such as emotional engagement, perceived comfort and to which extent the user is absorbed in the VR experience. They also looked at how objective biometric data such as eye-tracking could be connected to the subjective reporting.

The web address (URL) of our joint website has recently been changed from vu-utwente.nl  to vu-ut.nl. Veel belangstelling voor werkbezoek VU-UT
Een in vele opzichten zonnige middag met volop inspirerende ontmoetingen. Dat kenmerkte het derde werkbezoek VU-UT, dit keer op 4 april op de VU-campus in Amsterdam. Zo’n 140 onderzoekers, beleidsmedewerkers en docenten deelden kennis, ervaring en ideeën. De samenwerking groeit en ook de plannen voor de toekomst, waarmee de samenwerking t/m en met 2030 wordt ingevuld, krijgen steeds meer vorm. Na alle mini-events, meetings, rondleidingen over de campus en de Zuidas, een bezoek aan het DemonstratorLab van de VU en presentaties over de gezamenlijke opleidingen, werd het bezoek afgesloten met een buffet in het O2|Labgebouw dat de VU deelt met het Amsterdam UMC. Het volgende werkbezoek is op woensdag 22 november in Twente.

Verkenning 'Industrial Engineering and Management' aan de VU
De UT en VU verkennen de mogelijkheden voor de start van de gezamenlijke bacheloropleiding 'Industrial Engineering and Management' (IEM) aan de VU. De bacheloropleiding aan de UT is al jaren succesvol. IEM is een technische opleiding die toegankelijk is voor VWO-ers met wiskunde B in hun profiel. De opleiding combineert techniek met bedrijfskunde en afgestudeerden houden zich bezig met het ontwerpen, analyseren en beheersen van bewerkingen en systemen voor productie en dienstverlening. In die hoedanigheid vormen zij de brug tussen het idee en de praktijk en creëren zij waarde voor bedrijven en de samenleving. Voor de nieuwe opleiding wordt gekeken naar een duidelijke positionering binnen de VU School of Business and Economics. Voor studiekiezers is het belangrijk te communiceren
dat deze gezamenlijke opleiding aan de VU opleidt tot een diploma van de UT.

Aletta Kraneveld is met ingang van 1 december 2022 de nieuwe decaan van de bètafaculteit van de VU en samen met Joost Kok (UT), tevens de nieuw coalitieleider van de Impactcoalitie Smart Societies. In september gaat aan de VU de nieuwe gezamenlijke bacheloropleiding Creative Technology (CreaTe) van start. In de weken voor de bachelordagen is door het marketingteam VU-UT CreaTe online en offline een introductiecampagne gevoerd, met name om bekend te maken dat deze opleiding nu ook in Amsterdam aangeboden wordt. Een van de uitingen waren abri’s (reclameposters) die in de week van 14 t/m 21 maart 30 op vele plaatsen in de Randstad te zien waren. Ze zijn door VU en UT collega’s onder meer gespot in hartje Amsterdam, Amersfoort, Haarlem, Hilversum en Zeist. De campagne heeft in ieder  geval geleid tot een toename van het aantal bezoekers op de CreaTe website.

Creating Secure Societies over de streep tijdens VU-UT Werkbezoek
De impactcoalitie Creating Secure Societies (CSS) kan terugkijken op een geslaagd programma tijdens het VU-UT Werkbezoek op 4 april jl. Er waren presentaties van de projecten uit de interne call van 2022, met onderwerpen als een ‘effectieve training tegen social engineering threats’ en 'politiewerk in de metaverse tegen drugscriminaliteit'. Het was inspirerend om te zien dat ook de betrokken studenten hier een podium kregen. In de interactieve middagsessie leerden VU en UT collega’s elkaar beter kennen in het spel ‘over de streep’. In de daaropvolgende speeddate-sessies werden deelnemers uitgedaagd hun expertise en kennis te delen met collega’s, met ludieke ‘Tony Awards’ als beloning voor geslaagde matches. Op 22 november verzorgt CSS opnieuw een programma tijdens het UT-VU Werkbezoek in Enschede.

Creative Technology @VU @UT – het Tramhokje
De start van de bachelor Creative Technology (CreaTe) in 2023 aan de VU komt steeds dichterbij. Alma Schaafstal is projectleider van het opzetten van de nevenvestiging namens de UT en blogt regelmatig over de weg naar Amsterdam. ‘Soms volgens activiteiten en mijlpalen elkaar in een razendsnel tempo op en is het lastig kiezen. Zo stonden we voor de tweede keer op de Open Dagen van de VU en werden we geconfronteerd met studiezoekers die in een weekend zowel naar Twente als Amsterdam reisden om zelf het verschil tussen de VU en de UT te ervaren.’

VU-studenten en UT-onderzoekers meten impact VR-tentoonstelling
Sebastian Hirjoaba, Iris Roskam en Eser Berçin zijn bachelorstudenten van de interdisciplinaire minor Digital Humanities and Social Analytics van de VU. Ze hebben onder begeleiding van UT-onderzoekers Shenghui Wang en Delaram Javdani Rikhtehgar een gebruikerservaringsonderzoek voor VR bij kunsttentoonstellingen ontwikkeld. De studenten bezochten de UT-campus om met een bestaande VR-tentoonstelling te werken, deze te ervaren en de vereisten voor hun onderzoek te bepalen. Ze ontwikkelden een zelfrapportage-enquête voor de subjectieve ervaringen van gebruikers zoals de emotionele betrokkenheid, het ervaren comfort en in welk mate de gebruiker opgaat in de VR-ervaring. Vervolgens keken ze hoe ze objectieve biometrische gegevens zoals eye-tracking konden verbinden met de subjectieve rapportage.
