Dear Colleague,

My name is Barbara Leitner, and I am a Junior Researcher at the Department of Ethics, Law, and Humanities at the AmsterdamUMC. I have cc’d my colleague from the Amsterdam Center for Research Integrity and Open Science (RIOS): Rita Santos who has shared your contact information with me.

We are working on a project that aims to empower master's students towards responsible decision making towards choosing to do a PhD. Master's students often lack a clear understanding of the full responsibilities, requirements, and realities of starting a PhD. This gap is particularly pronounced for students who have not participated in research internships and lack insights into the workings of academia. Although pursuing a PhD is often encouraged towards the end of master's programs, many students lack the information needed to make an informed decision.

For the project, we are organizing four informal discussion sessions between master's students and PhD candidates from various faculties and doctoral schools at the VU and AmsterdamUMC.

Each session will be semi-structured informally starting with a short presentation by one of the facilitators,  followed by three presentations from PhD’s who will share their experiences in navigating a PhD, touching on topics such as supervision, career path, mental health, well-being, and social safety. The presentations will be followed by open discussions where the master's students will be divided into groups with a PhD.

We aim to create a safe and confidential environment where both Master students and PhD candidates can openly share experiences.

We hope these sessions will facilitate networking and contribute to building a healthy research culture.

We have set the following four dates: October 13th, October 28th, November 17th, and December 1st. Each workshop will be held from 15:00 to 17:00 pm in the VU Main Building.
