The blood-cerebrospinal ­fluid (CSF) barrier is an important and unique single layer of epithelial cells situated at the interface between blood and brain, with wide-ranging effects on the brain. The group of Roosmarijn Vandenbroucke focuses on the role of the blood-CSF barrier in systemic infl­ammation (such as sepsis and gut infl­ammation) and neuroinfl­ammation (such as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease) in preclinical models. Her research aims to identify novel targets to treat infl­ammatory diseases, as well as to develop novel delivery strategies to target the brain.

Prof. Roosmarijn Vandenbroucke obtained her PhD in 2008 at Ghent University, after which she started her Postdoc and eventually became a professor at Ghent University in 2015. In 2018, alongside her role as a professor, she became a group leader at the VIB Center for Inflammation Research. In this workshop, she will discuss and answer questions about her career path within research.
