How the brain translates sensation into movement remains one of the most fundamental questions in neuroscience. The group of Gilad Silberberg at Karolinska Institutet investigates the functional organization of neuronal circuits in the basal ganglia and neocortex to uncover how local microcircuits shape sensory and motor function in health and disease. Dr Gilad Silberberg obtained his PhD at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, after which he pursued postdoctoral research at the Brain Mind Institute in Lausanne, Switzerland, and later joined Karolinska Institutet in 2005 as a postdoc in Sten Grillner's lab at the Nobel Institute for Neurophysiology. In 2008 he established his own research group at Karolinska Institutet's Department of Neuroscience, becoming associate professor in 2011 and full Professor of Neurophysiology in 2018. In his group, he makes use of electrophysiology, optogenetics, and computational modeling to map the synaptic connectivity and activity of neurons in the basal ganglia and neocortex.
In this workshop, Dr Gilad will discuss his career path within research and the current methods used in his lab.
