UN Secretary-General issues landmark Call for Action on Methane


At London Climate Action Week, UN Secretary-General António Guterres launched a global call for action on methane.


“London isn't just calling—it’s cooking,” Guterres said, as a heat dome gripped the city and much of Europe. He urged rapid action to limit temperature overshoot and bring warming back below 1.5 degrees Celsius as quickly as possible.


Guterres outlined nine actions across three key sectors by 2030, including fixing oil and gas leaks, making methane measurable, reportable and verifiable, and adopting a global methane standard for a near-zero methane fossil fuel market.


UNEP’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) provides the tools needed to pull this climate emergency brake through science, data and transparency.

Global Methane Pledge co-conveners, Canada and European Union, reaffirm commitment and echo call for action


At the Global Methane Pledge Ministerial Roundtable, Canada and the European Commission reaffirmed methane action as a pillar of energy security. They stressed that cutting leaks, venting and flaring can expand available gas supply, reduce price volatility and strengthen resilience in strained energy markets.


“Both Canada and the European Union continue to do their part to meet the GMP target,” they said in a statement. “While urgent action is needed across all sources of methane, globally, the largest potential for immediate methane reductions is in the fossil fuel sector. Canada and the EU are committed to promote innovation to support methane mitigation as well as the full and pragmatic implementation of strong regulatory frameworks on methane emissions that drive methane abatement, accelerate the takeup of clean technology, and support security of supply.”

UNEP, partners ramp up efforts to address major methane leaks



New funding from Bloomberg Philanthropies will help ramp up global efforts to address major methane leaks through IMEO’s Methane Alert and Response System (MARS).


The support directly advances the Secretary-General’s call for a zero-tolerance approach to super-emitters and stronger accountability, including by empowering countries to commit to and achieve an 80 per cent response rate to MARS alerts—a critical step towards full mitigation.


“We can now see methane pollution as it happens,” said Inger Andersen, Executive Director of UNEP. “Inaction is not an oversight—it is a choice. Countries and operators must act.”

Investors call for cuts to coal and steel sector methane


Investors representing nearly US$10 trillion in assets under management, issued a landmark call for efforts to track and curb methane in metallurgical (met) coal mining,<https://un.mdrtor.com/track/link/key/107717-130-2108-1-4732-4684/signature/b25b8804238e6cbd33911a71ad208174/userid/90ea42c8917fa9cf7103bcd98890d16e> an increasingly visible risk across the steel value chain.



Methane from met coal mining makes up roughly 1/5 of steel’s near-term climate footprint yet remains largely unmeasured and unmanaged.



The investors called on coal producers to set and disclose methane reduction plans, and on steelmakers and buyers to adopt procurement frameworks that promote transparency. Investors called on companies across the value chain to engage with IMEO’s Steel Methane Programme (SMP), the first global initiative focused on steel’s met coal methane emissions.

MARS expands with Carbon Mapper data



Methane monitoring is getting stronger through a collaboration with Carbon Mapper, which brings additional high-resolution satellite data from Planet Labs’ Tanager into MARS. The partnership will support rapid alerts on major emission events and advance collaboration on monitoring and attribution.



“Cutting methane at scale requires more than detection—it requires putting information in the hands of those who can use it,” said Martin Krause, UNEP Climate Change Division Director. “Carbon Mapper’s contribution is a valuable part of that wider effort to faster scale methane mitigation worldwide.”
