Dear Anne, this is really terrible, sad and shocking news. Only a few months ago, in early January, we exchanged a couple of email messages and talked about the possibility of getting together soon to catch up. Beate was a pioneering scholar of mixedness, a great thinker, teacher and mentor, and, most importantly, an extraordinary human being. It is really heartbreaking to learn of her passing. I will miss her. She was always so generous, supportive, and engaging to talk to, and she gave the best tours of Paris! I send my deepest condolences to her loved ones, family, friends and colleagues. I will always think of Beate with great fondness and admiration. RIP 
P.S. And I will of course donate to the association. It is a great initiative, and it is what she wanted.

    Dear Colleagues,

    It is with great sadness that I write to let you know that our dear
    Colleague, Beate Collet passed away recently after a long illness. Beate
    was a supportive and encouraging scholar, with such an amazing breadth and
    depth of knowledge.

    I know I will not be alone in missing her very much as a colleague and
    friend.

    We, the members of her family, friends, colleagues, doctoral students and
    students are devastated by this loss and wish to honor Beate's memory by
    following her wishes. She didn't want flowers or wreaths, but wanted us to
    have the opportunity to donate to a Senegalese association supported by her
    daughter Tikam.
