Subject: Music360 & GEMA: cooperation?

Dear Doctor Gordijn,

We are Germany's collecting society GEMA (equivalent to BUMA) and are contacting you due to your role as project coordinator in the project "Music360".
I’m the Director of the Business Development Directorate and I would like to share some insights from a Study we are currently conducting and resulting data which may be a contribution to your project.

With great interest we have intensively worked through the available information about “Music360”, as the influence of (background) music is of outstanding importance to us as a collecting society.

Our main objective within GEMA is to lay appropriate foundations for the future of the company and to think innovatively. Based on this objective, we have been in the process of conducting a multi-stage scientific “Music Impact Study”, that examines the effect of background music on sales at the point of sale. The underlying idea is that a concrete and quantifiable proof of the economic value of music will help to get a fair compensation for the artists.

Our “Music Impact Study” consists of several phases to get a 360-degree view of the topic. The centerpiece is a large-scale empirical study with 150 participants from the retail and gastronomy sector. We are currently in the middle of a pre-test, collecting data with a small number of participants, and we are recruiting participants for the large study.

Other components of the study are:
- A profound literature study that summarizes and evaluates highly ranked studies from the last decades on this topic, elaborated by our scientists
- Development of a scientifically tested study design
- Online-surveys, conducted with several hundred participants
- We will conduct focus groups examining the costumer perspective and interviews with scientists and professionals from the music industry

To meet scientific standards and achieve the best possible results, we work with a renowned, international team of experts: Scientists, market researchers, music industry luminaries and sound agencies.

As you can see, we are currently collecting an extensive amount of data and will be collecting more essential data with the field study that will lead the way in proving the value of background music. We think that we can make an important contribution to your study and that a cooperation could be beneficial for both of us.

Since "Music360" and our "Music Impact Study" have a similar focus, we would be happy to get to know each other and discuss overlaps and potential collaboration opportunities.

I would love to talk to you and suggest arranging a phone call with you to determine, if and how a cooperation could make sense. If you have interest for a preliminary exchange my colleague will organize a virtual exchange.
