Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to invite you to the next meeting of the VU ML Seminar<https://sites.google.com/view/vumls/home>.
Our next speaker is Benjamin Paassen, who will talk about Machine Learning for Education.
Benjamin Paaßen received their PhD in Intelligent Systems from Bielefeld University in 2019. After postdocs at The University of Sydney, Humboldt-University of Berlin and the German Research Center for Artifical Intelligence (DFKI), Paaßen was awarded a Junior Professorship (with tenure track) for Knowledge Representation and Machine Learning at Bielefeld University in 2023. The research foci are machine learning for education, explainable and interpretable machine learning models, and knowledge-informed machine learning.
Abstract:
The vision of artificial intelligence in education is clear: any student should be able to receive individualized, perfectly matching and pedagogically optimized support during any point of their learning journey - a one-to-one tutor that is always available. While this vision exists since the 80s, the success of large language models (LLMs) seems to bring us closer than ever. Unfortunately, though, LLMs fail to be a one-size-fits-all solution for education. The talk will cover intelligent tutoring systems (ITS), which role machine learning methods (especially LLMs) play in constructing ITS, and which open research challenges remain for the future.
The meeting will take place on Monday 16 Feb. at 10:00 in room NU-3A57. We hope to see many of you there!
The organizers,
Zhao & Daniel
