Please find below the first announcement of a seminar on modern symplectic geometry, which may hopefully be interesting to some of you.

Dear all,



Starting on Friday November 1, the “Symplectic Dirty Hands“ seminar will kick off. The goal of the seminar is to gather master students, PhD students and researchers who are curious about recent work in symplectic geometry and want to learn the main mathematical ideas behind it in an informal setting (we will get our hands dirty and go at a slow pace!).



The seminar will be followable with a background of basic symplectic and differential geometry (as studied in Mastermath). The rest of the prerequisites will be discussed during the first talks.



We will start by learning about the role of Fukaya categories to study the group of symplectomorphisms of a symplectic manifold: when can we generate free subgroups? We will mainly be interested in understanding this paper<https://arxiv.org/pdf/1204.2851> by Ailsa Keating.



We expect this will take up until February. After that we will choose all together another topic.



The seminar will take place every other Friday in the time slot 13:00 – 14:30 and it will be in hybrid form with rotating location in Leiden, Utrecht, Amsterdam (VU). There will be a one-hour talk followed by discussions.



The first meeting will be coming Friday, 1 November, starting at 13:00, at VU Amsterdam, NU building (Maryam).
