Dear all,

Friday we will continue with our investigations of the wonderful world of stable homotopy theory, where spaces can have negative dimensions, and cofibrations are fibrations!

Please see the announcement below. Note that this is in utrecht. My notes of last talk are available if needed. You won’t need to read those before the talks on Friday though.

Alba is not in the Netherlands, but is following the talk remotely. If you are also not in the netherlands you can request me a link. (But if you are in the Netherlands, and you are joining the seminar, I expect you to come to utrecht).

Best,
THomas

Good morning everyone,

I'd like to remind you that we have started the Fishy AG<https://www.few.vu.nl/~trt800/arbeitsgemeinschaft.html> reading seminar with our friends at the VU and will continue this Friday, details below. We are reading Spectra and stable homotopy theory<https://people.math.binghamton.edu/malkiewich/spectra_book_draft.pdf> by Cary Malkiewich on Fridays occupied by neither the DDT&G nor Friday Fish, switching between Utrecht and Amsterdam. Apologies if you missed Thomas' introductory talk last week because I didn't send a separate reminder! But you should have no problem joining now since we won't assume knowledge of his talk.

This Friday at 14:00 in HFG 6.10, Anna and I will go through some preliminaries from the first chapter of Malkiewich's book. Anna will discuss the basics of (co)fiber sequences and show how they can be used to construct long exact sequences. Additionally, we will look at some examples and properties of adjoint functors. After a break, I will introduce homotopy limits and colimits and try to convince you how useful they are. In particular, we will see how many familiar constructions are secretly examples of them, and discuss how well they get along with homotopy and (co)homology of spaces.

We hope to see many of you there!

Best,
Aaron
