Dear colleagues,

Christoph Weniger, the course coordinator of the ML for Physics and Astronomy MSc course, is looking for project supervisors in May 2026.
During the first four weeks of the course, the students have already learned the ML basics.
Last year, I supervised a group of four students who spent ~20h/w on a ML group assignment, and in the end, I was happy with the outcome.
Below is Christoph's call.

Best,

Dear everybody,

After the successful (and very enjoyable!) introduction of group projects in last year’s ML for Physics and Astronomy course, I’m again looking for lecturers, postdocs, PhD students, and MSc students who would be available to supervise 1-2 projects in May 2026.

Details:

  * Projects are carried out in groups of 4-5 students, I expect around 15-20 student groups in total.
  * Supervisors are expected to provide a project description, meet with the group about once or twice per week, and offer general guidance; students are expected to work largely independently.
  * Project descriptions are typically 1–2 pages and can be based on ongoing research, exploratory ideas, or extensions of existing work.
  * The same project can be offered to multiple groups.
  * Students will get access to Snellius computing resources.
  * The projects can be a great way to explore new ideas, connect with motivated MSc students, and potentially initiate future thesis projects.
  * Assessment: Based on group performance, final group presentation, and potentially an optional report (TBD)

Timeline:

  * Project preparation: Project descriptions due by 17 April
  * Project duration: Wednesday 6 May - Monday, 25 May (3 weeks; typically 1-2h contact time per week per group)
  * Final presentation: Tuesday, 26 May

If you, or members of your group, would be interested in supervising a project, please let me know! You would be very welcome. Please also let me know if you have a project idea but limited ML experience, and I would be happy to discuss.

Kind regards,
Christoph
