Dear all,

Since September 1st, VU has implemented a new assessment framework for knowledge security. Furthermore, our faculty now has a ‘help desk’ for questions about knowledge safety. You can reach Quirien Bedaux, Kirsty Brachel and Dorien Verhoeven through a dedicated email address: internationalsecurity.beta at vu.nl<mailto:internationalsecurity.beta at vu.nl>. Below some more information on the assessment framework and knowledge safety, to refresh your memory.

Assessment framework VU
Recently, awareness has grown at VU Amsterdam that collaborations, which are permitted under legislation and regulations, are not always desirable from the perspective of human rights and armed conflicts. That is why the assessment framework “Risks related to human rights violations and armed conflicts” has been developed. The framework, which formally came into effect on 1 September 2025 and will be widely applied within VU Amsterdam, is a living document and will be adjusted as necessary based on new insights and experiences. On this page, you will find an overview of the working method and answers to frequently asked questions: Assessment Framework International Collaborations - Q&A - Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam<https://vu.nl/en/employee/onderwijs-en-onderzoeksbeleid/assessment-framework-international-collaborations-q-a>

Knowledge safety
The following steps need to be completed before we can hire or extend people

  1. Six questions from the Knowledge Security Framework must be answered in advance. These questions are listed in the Flowchart (see attachement “Stroomschema Kennisveiligheid VU.pdf”).
  2. If one or more of the questions in the Flowchart are answered with “yes”, or if there are doubts about the answers to the questions, additional questions must be answered (attachment “2B Uitgebreide Vragenlijst Kennisveiligheid.pdf”). Both are in Dutch. These will be available in English on a short notice.
  3. The completed questionnaire, together with a CV if applicable, should be sent to the Knowledge Security contact persons at the faculty (internationalsecurity.beta at vu.nl<mailto:internationalsecurity.beta at vu.nl><mailto:internationalsecurity.beta at vu.nl>) and the departmental management team should be informed. The faculty board will then make a decision. In complex cases, the Knowledge Security contact persons will reach out to their central counterparts (in which case it might take some more time before they have a final decision).
