[staff-physics-and-astronomy-HL-UHD-UD] liability in case of editor-in-chief position

Dear all,

The faculty board asked us to draw attention to the following important issue.



It appears that being editor-in-chief of a journal may mean that someone will be held personally liable, should a lawsuit ensue. In fact, this is not covered by VU's insurance policies (nor, for that matter, at (various) other universities). Therefore, if employees are final editors or are considering this, the faculty board (and the VU legal department) would advise them to stop or refrain from doing so.

As far as is known now, being an editor is possible, because you would be advising on what to do with an article, but editor-in-chief (where you make decisions on rejecting or accepting articles) is a potentially risky position. This does not apply to journals from the major publishers, as they have their own liability rules. However, it is recommended to at least check.



Therefore, please let us know if you hold or plan to accept an editor- in- chief position so we can check with the VU legal department.
