Dear colleagues,
Discussing among us, and also based on discussions with other colleagues
in the department, we realised that many research groups (including
ARCNL and Nikhef) have ongoing activities which can be broadly
classified as "AI and modelling", and including machine learning,
numerical simulations, high-performance computing, model inference,
applied statistics and so on, which in many cases are instrumental to
relate theory and experiment.
With this motivation, we would like to propose a meetup of all
departmental PIs (and their groups) interested in "AI and modelling in
Physics", broadly understood. The idea would be to organize an away day
where each of us could present the problems and methods used in their
research, and then we could do some kind of "speed dating" to see what
possible synergies can arise between the various groups. We would also
invite colleagues from other VU-Beta departments to present their
activities in this direction.
If there is enough momentum, we could turn this initiative into a
regular event in the scientific life of the department.
If you would be interested in joining this initiative, could you let us
know before *Friday November 10th*? It is perfectly fine if you are not
yet working on these topics, and you just want to learn what is
happening within the department concerning all things AI and modelling.
Looking forward to hearing back from you!
Best,
Chase, Greg, and Juan
