Dear colleagues,
We are excited to share with you the great news that two new colleagues,
Joris van Heijningen and Sven Askes, will be joining the Physics and
Astronomy department in the coming weeks.
These two Assistant Professor positions arise in the context of the
VU/UT collaboration for the Mechanical Engineering program (see also
Jordi's email on 18/07), where the two new colleagues will be playing a
crucial role as "champions".
Sven obtained his PhD in Leiden in 2016, was postdoctoral researcher
first at Jena and then an AMOLF, and since 2021 he has been a
Veni-supported research fellow in our department. His research interests
cover various aspects of photophysics, nanophotonics, materials science,
(bio)inorganic chemistry, heterogeneous catalysis, and nanotechnology,
with a strong emphasis on using light to drive chemical reactions. Sven
will join both the photoconversion materials section (for his research
activities) as well as the Mechanical Engineering teaching group.
Joris obtained his PhD at the VU (Nikhef group) in 2017, worked as
postdoc in Australia, and since 2020 he holds a tenured research
scientist position at UC Louvain in Belgium. His research interests
focus on gravitational wave science and instrumentation as well as in
the development of new detector technologies for present and future GW
observatories. Joris will join both the Nikhef section (for his research
activities) as well as the Mechanical Engineering teaching group.
Please join us in welcoming Sven and Joris as new faculty in our department!
Best regards,
The MT
