Dear all,

Instead of the “Showcase” lectures to promote our research at the VU under AMEP master students (that I organised 2 years back), now a series of short talks is organised throughout the year. If you are interested to present a talk there, see for more information in the email below.

Best regards,
Kjeld

Dear Prof. dr. Eikema,

This year the Advanced Matter and Energy Physics master track (part of the MPhys degree program) has a new module called AMEP Seminar. For this course we, the first year AMEP MSc students, will organize monthly events concerning research in the field of experimental physics and related fields in Amsterdam. One goal of these talks is to give us an overview of the research that is being conducted in the greater Amsterdam area and what our own possibilities for a Master thesis are.
Another goal is to get to meet alumni who are now working outside academic research, and hear about their career paths. We are designing the AMEP Seminar series to be inspiring for us and other students (e.g. BSc NatSter students and students of other MPhys tracks) who will be able to follow the seminar recordings posted on the AMEP website.
Finally, the AMEP Seminar is a place where we learn, hands-on, how to organize, host, create support for and interest in a series of scientific and career-based seminars.

We would like to invite members of research groups to give a small talk (15-20 minutes), that is aimed at MPhys (and BSc) students orienting themselves for their Masters (or bachelor) project. The talks should also be appealing to people that are just interested in the scientific topic, but not necessarily looking for a project. Given the huge number of research institutes and groups active in greater Amsterdam, our approach to tackle this is to organize four talks around each session. Two of these talks will be face-to-face, being part of the timetabled AMEP Seminar sessions (https://datanose.nl/#course[99890]) and the other two presentations will be put on our blog (see: https://amep.amsterdam/blog/) in video format. The face-to-face talks will also be recorded (with the speaker’s consent) and put on our blog so other students who were not able to attend the face-to-face sessions can watch them and get inspired as well.

To organize these talks, we would like to gather some information about potential speakers. This is open to everyone in your institute / department / cluster / group e.g. also 2nd Master students, PhDs, and Postdocs.

We have set up an online excel sheet in which those who are interested can enter their name, email, and a short one-liner about their research. This sheet has different tabs per research institute (please see tab VU LaserLab for your institute.) The link to the excel sheet is given here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1l_mQ-njg7ibrIhH3bHbtR5fVhFPfv0sMbnbJyW3NZ_g/edit?usp=sharing

In order to help us get the AMEP Seminar on the rails, we would like to ask you to forward this message to the research groups in your institute/department and ask everyone interested in some facetime with the AMEP Class of 2021 to sign-up.
Our AMEP Seminar team will make a random (but still balanced) selection of four talks for each session and email the speakers with instructions well in advance, so they have time to prepare.

Since we are also looking for potential speakers who are currently not working in academia, we would like to ask you and your colleagues to also add interested alumni and industry contacts (there is a separate tab in the excel sheet for this).
We will be providing a small lunch for the speakers and attendees during each session.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Best wishes,

The AMEP Seminar team 2021-2022
