According to the International Energy Agency’s latest Global Methane Tracker <https://un.mdrtor.com/track/link/key/107717-124-1981-1-4732-4684/signature/9775c75d293948bfd9ad7e12bd531583/userid/90ea42c8917fa9cf7103bcd98890d16e> 70 per cent of fossil fuel methane emissions could be addressed with available technology – and 30 per cent of emissions could be reduced at no net cost.

Ten years after the Paris Agreement, the international community convened under France’s G7 Presidency to send a clear signal: reducing methane is a triple win—for climate, energy security and economic growth. The event was attended by leaders from governments, international organizations, the private sector and civil society, including Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley and Minister Monique Barbut of France.

At the event, UNEP’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) announced an expansion of its global methane detection system.


For the first time, IMEO’s Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) will track and notify emissions from coal mines and waste facilities. The expansion follows UNEP’s analysis<https://un.mdrtor.com/track/link/key/107717-124-1983-1-4732-4684/signature/9775c75d293948bfd9ad7e12bd531583/userid/90ea42c8917fa9cf7103bcd98890d16e> of the world’s top 50 methane sources, many of which are found in the coal and waste sectors.


“Expanding UNEP’s Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) to coal and waste, strengthening response frameworks, and bringing more companies into verified measurement sends a clear signal: The era of invisible methane emissions is ending,” said Martin Krause, Director of UNEP’s Climate Change Division.

The announcement was bolstered by new commitments<https://un.mdrtor.com/track/link/key/107717-124-1985-1-4732-4684/signature/9775c75d293948bfd9ad7e12bd531583/userid/90ea42c8917fa9cf7103bcd98890d16e> from national oil companies joining UNEP’s Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0).


Libya’s National Oil Corporation, Pakistan’s Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL), and Angola’s Sonangol are the newest members to join the partnership, bringing OGMP 2.0’s coverage closer to half of global oil and gas production—and advancing the industry’s shift toward measurement-based emissions reporting.

Alerts alone don’t cut emissions – and IMEO is working with partners to ensure they lead to concrete mitigation.


IMEO and the International Energy Agency (IEA) released the MARS Response Blueprint<https://un.mdrtor.com/track/link/key/107717-124-1986-1-4732-4684/signature/9775c75d293948bfd9ad7e12bd531583/userid/90ea42c8917fa9cf7103bcd98890d16e>, a playbook for turning methane alerts into real world fixes. The step-by-step guides governments on how to assess the urgency of different emission events, verify emissions, engage operators and track mitigation progress. In addition, IMEO and its partners will continue to support countries working to respond to MARS alerts with hands-on technical assistance.

Steel’s climate footprint is an overlooked methane challenge—and a significant mitigation opportunity. IMEO’s new Coal Methane Database<https://un.mdrtor.com/track/link/key/107717-124-1987-1-4732-4684/signature/9775c75d293948bfd9ad7e12bd531583/userid/90ea42c8917fa9cf7103bcd98890d16e> breaks through a critical information barrier, delivering unprecedented transparency for a sector long characterized by data gaps.


The database provides mine-level emission estimates for nearly 250 coal mines—covering more than half of global metallurgical coal production. By integrating data from multiple verified sources—satellite observations, scientific research and official inventories—IMEO has equipped operators, regulators, investors and steelmakers with the information they need to cut emissions and drive accountability.
