Dear Colleagues,

We are delighted to announce the opening of two new positions in the mathematics laboratory (Dieudonné laboratory) of Nice (France). Please forward to your contacts who might be interested and read both position descriptions carefully.

  1.
Junior Professorship Chair: Modeling in Neurosciences and Cognition

Junior Professor Chairs are a new recruitment path granting access to a permanent position in the French public university system. After a 6-year tenure track period and following evaluation, the successful candidate may be granted tenure as a Full Professor at Université Côte d’Azur, subject to the approval of a tenure commission.

Calendar

  *
Deadline for submitting applications: June 20th 2025 - 4pm (Paris time)
  *
Selection committee meetings: From June 23rd to September 2025
  *
Preferred starting date: October 1st, 2025

Research Responsibilities

The position is based at the Jean Alexandre Dieudonné Laboratory<https://math.univ-cotedazur.fr/> (LJAD), aligned with the NeuroMod Institute’s scientific goals. NeuroMod<https://neuromod.univ-cotedazur.eu/> is an interdisciplinary institute involving 15 different laboratories at Université Côte d’Azur, aiming to develop coherent modeling approaches to understand the brain—from synapse to behavior. It combines 1) Computational approaches using experimental data and 2) Mathematical approaches identifying fundamental principles.
The candidate must have expertise in modeling, theoretical neuroscience, and mathematics, with the ability to create data-compatible models and analyze phenomena across scales. Strong mathematical skills and the capacity to collaborate across disciplines are essential, as is leadership in community-building and attracting researchers.

Teaching Responsibilities

The NeuroMod Institute offers two Master's programs, including an English-language M.Sc. in Modeling of Neural and Cognitive Systems (ModNeuroCog). This program trains future interdisciplinary researchers with strong skills in modeling, neuroscience, and cognition. It includes two lab internships within Université Côte d’Azur, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. This international, selective program admits a maximum of 15 students annually, with over half continuing in Ph.D. studies. The recruited candidate will teach math courses related to cognitive neuroscience in this particular M.Sc. and may propose a new course. The candidate may also contribute to other training programs from the mathematics department (from undergraduate to Master’s levels), enhancing their appeal through his/her interdisciplinary expertise.
Beyond this program, the Math. department hosts, two undergraduate programs (Mathematics, and MIASHS), three double majors (Math-Computer Science, Math-Physics, Math-Biology), three Master’s tracks (Mathematical Engineering, MathAgreg, Fundamental and Applied Math), two international Master’s programs.
The candidate is expected to contribute more broadly to mathematics teaching and may assume training leadership roles in both NeuroMod and the math department (as director of a Master for example).

NB : Applications must be submitted through the French platform Odyssee<https://sso-odyssee.enseignementsup-recherche.gouv.fr/auth/realms/odyssee/login-actions/authenticate?execution=680dfcbb-20d9-4022-bffb-5326189a25b6&client_id=odyssee-front&tab_id=QmhoyVBggvM>. The Job ID is 252926.

  1.
CNRS Tenure Track Position in Mathematics of Life

This position is aligned in spirit with the previous one but differs in three key aspects:

  1. Career Advancement: After a 3-to-6-years tenure-track period, successful candidates may obtain a permanent CNRS Research Director position, which carries no teaching obligations. As a national CNRS position, it offers greater flexibility, allowing the researcher to eventually move between laboratories without being tied to a specific university.

  2.
Broader Research Scope: The research focus is broader than that of the previous position, encompassing all areas where mathematics intersects with the life sciences. In particular, CNRS seeks candidates with strong mathematical expertise and a commitment to innovative, interdisciplinary research. The goal is to address complex challenges where mathematical tools can yield precise and impactful solutions — for example, in studying collective cell behavior, epidemic dynamics, neural networks, the respiratory system, or tumor development.

  3. Laboratory Assignment: During the tenure-track period, the selected candidate will be affiliated with one of the following three mathematics laboratories in France: Laboratoire J.A. Dieudonné (Nice), Institut Denis Poisson (Orléans), or Laboratoire de Mathématiques de Bretagne Atlantique (Brest). A clear integration plan within one of these laboratories may be a crucial component of the application.

Application Deadline : 14 July 2025, 23:59:00 Paris time, at the CNRS webpage:

WARNINGS:

The French application platforms can be challenging for non-French speakers, and there are certain elements of the process that candidates unfamiliar with the French academic system might easily overlook.
