Dear Reader,

We hope you have been enjoying the longer daylight and warm sunshine. Once again, we bring you the latest from ALTI and other law and tech updates.

ALTI was well represented at the 16th International Conference on Computers, Privacy and Data Protection held last week in Brussels. Mark Leiser, Silvia De Conca and Sarah Eskens organized a panel<https://www.cpdpconferences.org/cpdp-panels/deceptive-design-in-online-interfaces-and-system-architecture-questions-for-eu-law> on “Deceptive Design in Online Interfaces and System Architecture: Questions for EU Law”. The panel explored the impact of dark patterns through the lens of regulations and fundamental human rights.

Two of our members, Tina van der Linden and Thibault Schrepel were speakers at the Amsterdam Law Forum Conference 2023<http://www.amsterdamlawforum.com/alf-annual-conference-2023/>. Tina spoke on “The Incompatibility of Legal and Computational Thinking”, while Thibault spoke on “Augmenting Legal Analysis with AI” (slides<https://prezi.com/view/ogXo4bD4O6NGuI2h0CqB/>). The general consensus of speakers and participants was that there is a need to adapt to AI, and regulation should be collaborative.

Ioana Bratu has been appointed for the second time as a judge in the prestigious Manfred Lachs Moot Court, Asia-Pacific Rounds. This renowned space law competition focuses on exploring the intricate nuances of outer space regulations. In this year's edition, the case at hand delved into the contentious realm of anti-satellite weapons in outer space, scrutinizing the delicate balance between weaponization and peaceful exploration of the cosmos.

Thibault Schrepel gave a keynote at the Future of Antitrust Series organized by Brigham Young University in Brussels with the theme “Innovation, Networks, & the Frontiers of Competition Policy”. You can watch his presentation on “Complexity-Minded Antitrust” here<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaqfXOiE4tg>. He discusses why complexity-minded antitrust is important in 2023 and suggests how to apply the framework.

Joining the panel on “Decentralized Economy, Web3.0 and the Metaverse” at Haifa University’s conference on “Financial Regulation in the Digital Era”, Thibault Schrepel talks about “Web3 Dependence on Big Tech Companies”. You can watch his presentation <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaqfXOiE4tg> here<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WM4E2zE3hvY>, where he draws an interesting connection between vacuum cleaners and web3. He talked further about this topic at the Croatia Reg3 Conference.

That’s all from us this month. See you in June!
