Dear all,
We hope it has been productive since our last newsletter.
We thank all those who submitted their abstracts for the <https://alti.amsterdam/bileta23/> 38th Annual Bileta Conference<https://alti.amsterdam/bileta23/>. If you are yet to receive a response on the status of your abstract, you can expect it in the coming weeks. We are looking forward to everyone’s participation on Thursday 13 and Friday 14 April 2023. This year’s theme remains “Cyberlaw: Finally Getting Its Act(s) Together?”.
Now, as an introduction to the complex relationship between Web2 giants and Web3 projects, Thibault Schrepel just published a short article entitled <https://alti.amsterdam/big-tech-and-web3/> “Big Tech and Web3”<https://alti.amsterdam/big-tech-and-web3/>. The full research paper can be accessed <https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4284597> here<https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4284597>.
Even if all the requirements for the development and putting onto the market of high-risk AI are complied with, they can still produce results that are discriminatory or otherwise unfair. The proposed AI Regulation relies on a human-in-the-loop to function as a safety-valve. Is that a realistic option? Tina van der Linden answers this question in her piece advocating that for <https://alti.amsterdam/ai-we-need-another-hero/> “AI: We Need Another Hero!”<https://alti.amsterdam/ai-we-need-another-hero/>.
In another recent publication in Financial Innovation 2023;9(1):22, Tina van der Linden and Tina Shirazi co-authored a paper on “Markets in crypto-assets regulation: Does it provide legal certainty and increase adoption of crypto-assets?”. You can <https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9830123/> access the paper here<https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9830123/>.
The research groups of Fundamental Rights, Regulation and Responsible Government and ALTI are co-organizing a lecture to be delivered by prof. Karen Yeung of Birmingham University on Thursday 23rd February, at Vrije University Amsterdam. A masterclass for PhD candidates will follow after the lecture. Please email Wes (w.w.p.damen at vu.nl) if you would like to register.
ALTI will participate in <https://www.cpdpconferences.org/> CPDP 2023<https://www.cpdpconferences.org/> in May 2023! Sarah Eskens, Mark Leiser and Silvia De Conca are organizing a panel on deceptive design, with prestigious speakers from industry, academia, and policymaking.
Silvia De Conca is co-organizing the 18th IFIP summer school on privacy & identity management in Oslo (August 8-11 2023). It is open to PhDs and other researchers from every discipline, discussing a wide range of themes connected to privacy and identity in today's digital society. Attendees will publish their papers in the proceedings of the summer school (Springer). There is also a best paper award available! Please <https://ifip-summerschool.github.io/> find more details about the call for papers here<https://ifip-summerschool.github.io/> and spread it within your networks.
Last, calling all scholars from all backgrounds with an interest in law + technology. If you identify as such, you are welcome to join <https://alti.amsterdam/law-plus-tech-circle/> The Law + Tech Circle<https://ifip-summerschool.github.io/> coordinated by Thibault Schrepel. Members will participate in a bi-monthly discourse around law + technology.
See you again soon. Till then, stay safe and warm.
ALTI Team
